Well, what can I say? I think Elizabeth is a Fantastic write and cannot praise her high enough. I thought very highly of her destiny falls series (I recommend that a read as well) and although this is book number 1 in this series I'm already waiting for the next one!
The way her writing just flows I never actually find myself questioning what is and isn't real as it seems like it could be even though I know it's impossible, I never seem to stutter or stop and think hold on a minute I'm just excited to read the next part of the story.
Well done Elizabeth you've got me hooked again!

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2572 KP) rated Singing in the Dark in Books

Speaking, and Singing, Hope into the Darkness
Christian recording artist Ginny Owens presents ten chapters that take us to Scripture to look at the songs we can sing to God no matter what our circumstances are. No, these aren’t all taken from Psalms. Yes, she does stretch the definition of song a bit (which she acknowledges). But as we look at songs of praise and victory, laments, and a song for the plodding path, you will be encouraged and challenged a time or two.
Each chapter focuses on the person and story behind the passage we are studying, but Ginny makes these familiar elements fresh and brings out new insights. She also shares openly about her own struggles, including what she still struggles with.
The chapters around 15 to 20 pages each, and could be done as devotionals. I read the book over a couple of days, and I still found it encouraging. I plan to go back and revisit it at a slower pace soon. There is a lot to unpack here.
If you need encouragement in your life, you’ll be glad you picked up this book.

Hazel (2934 KP) rated The Silence Before Dawn (WW2 Resistance Series Book 1) [Audiobook] in Books

I really enjoyed listening to this audiobook which, although a work of fiction, is based on the true stories of women secret agents during World War II.
As you can imagine, there is an abundance of tension as the Resistance and SOE (Special Operations Executive) undertake their dangerous missions with the ever present threat of being discovered by the Gestapo.
The main character of Marianne is excellent and such a strong character as, in fact, are the rest of the cast. What I particularly liked is that the central focus is on the female protagonists and it depicted their bravery, commitment and sense of duty excellently.
The story, as you can imagine given the subject matter, is intense but riveting and compelling and I cannot praise the narrator enough - what an excellent job Sofia Zervudachi has done; there are quite a lot of characters, both male and female, and she made each one unique.
This is the first in a series and I very much look forward to finding out what happens next and I must give my thanks to Bookouture Audio and NetGalley for enabling me to listen to and share my thoughts of The Silence Before Dawn.

Neon's Nerd Nexus (360 KP) rated The Fifth Element (1997) in Movies

Shes so fragile, so human.
Number 4 in my #top10 #favourite films 'The Fifth Element'
------------------------------------------
Flawless #comedy, bursting with creativity, a fantastic & unique story, visually outstanding with stunningly intricate costume & set design #TheFifthElement is a masterpiece. #LucBesson is a genius & really has managed to create a #scifi #world brimming with #life, progress & great ancient lore while housing complex/interesting characters that are all played by the perfect cast. Luc is such a talented director creating a clever contrast of #dark, #violent, disturbing & adult themes mixed with wacky, #camp, #comedic & #childish tones that #complement each other & that flow together so technically well that most #superhero movie directors these days still struggle with getting this balance right. #Music invokes such dread & wonder too while dialog is so sensational it makes The Fifth Element possibly the most quotable film I've ever seen. Its really a #film that I can not praise highly enough & having such a great mix of genres makes it easily accessible to everyone. Without a doubt one of my favourite #love stories of all time & definitely my favourite sci-fi, if you haven't seen it you really are missing out. ------------------------------------------------

A Masterpiece
Where do I begin? I found no faults with this book, absolutely no criticisms whatsoever. The whole thing is a masterpiece in so many different ways and I cannot give it enough praise or do it enough justice. It is entirely unique, from the plot to the characters, the magic system and world building and especially the brilliant narration and author inserts. I have never read anything like it and I sincerely doubt I ever will. It also serves in putting across valuable lessons of life and the heart in such a way that is both simple to understand but complex in detail. This book is equal parts uplifting and heartwrenching and I can do nothing but applaud the author for her outstanding work and implore everyone, no matter their age, to read it in the hopes that they will take away something as incredible and treasured as I have. I'm holding out all my hope that there are many more adventures in this world yet to come.
*Note: This is the second installment in a series of companions but it does stand alone and anything carried over from the first novel is clearly explained when needed.

The best version of the best Beat 'Em Up game!
I can't praise this game enough! I loved and spent a lot of time, money on the arcade back in the day. While there had been many versions ported to consoles before, this was miles better!
The PS2 version had very chunky graphics, this version looked exactly like the original arcade! Large well animated characters with sharp details.
The arcade game came about between Street fighter and the classic Street fighter 2 games, and it shows. Though this went for a sideways scrolling beat 'em-up game. Even today it probably hasn't been bettered. Although this version was for the Megadrive, Mega-CD add on. Possibly the best game for it.
The cherry on the top was an extra mode not on the arcade. A time attack for 1 or 2 players to take on wave after wave of villians to see how many you could beat in the time allowed.
So this was even better than having the arcade in your home. You can get a version on Xbox 360 as a classic... But it looks like a port of the PS2 version unfortunately. Leaving this as the best version of the classic game.

Great characters (3 more)
An awesome soundtrack by John Rezenik lead singer of the goo goo dolls
Awesome action scenes
The subtle Easter eggs to it's source material
Basically if you read the story of treasure island you'll notice there's bound to be some changes or cuts and know that it's pretty much the same story (1 more)
It's a product of it's time. You'll definitely know that the film hasn't aged well which isn't the movies fault. Example A. The bad CG animation at the time was great but today's standards.... probably not so great
Treasure planet is good
An underrated Disney classic treasure planet deserves the praise it gets. The movie is swashbuckling fun and a pretty good movie as well. Now let's see just how good it is well...the movie for starters has a great cast of characters from our main character Jim to the awesome John silver. Also the soundtrack is awesome too with songs like I'm still here being the favorite out of the bunch. Also the movie has some pretty intense moments as well as some humor as well.
If I had to pick one bad about the movie is that it's a pretty generic plot and the story is pretty much more or less the same plot of treasure island

Sara Cox (1845 KP) rated Inferior: How Science Got Women Wrong in Books
Jun 20, 2019
As a scientist myself, I see all the time the imbalance of sexes within the industry. As a teacher, I see girls outperform boys in exams all the way through the school, the gender gap in attainment is one national trend many school are trying to combat. So when this book was made available to me through the school (each school got sent one free copy) I nabbed it up before any of my peers could.
This book covered how males and females have been viewed differently throughout history and how scientific developments have changed the views of both sexes. Even Darwin thought that women were lesser than men cognitively, which shocked me considering his research on evolution. There is evidence from neurological research and anthropological observation debunking views so engrained in our societal views that they as seen as common knowledge.
This book is definitely for the feminist. Both the brains of men and women have been studied and observed in tribes and show that we have so few differences. Myths of "women are better at multitasking" and "men are hunters" are challenged and proven otherwise.
I have nothing but praise for this book and cannot wait to read the next: Superior

Russ Troutt (291 KP) rated The Lighthouse (2019) in Movies
Oct 30, 2019
I steered me vessel to the theater last night and saw The Lighthouse. Not much I can say about the movie itself without giving spoilers, it's definitely one that can only be discussed between two people that have been stranded together for a couple of hours in a theater staring at the light from the projector viewing this film. Is it possible to love everything about a movie, but not really like the movie? Maybe I'm just going mad. The acting from Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson is some of the best you'll see this year, or any for that matter. The look and feel of the movie is as magical as the beauty and song of a siren on the rocky shore. To be honest, while giving praise to every aspect of it, I didn't feel like I actually liked the movie itself walking away from it. But with loving everything Robert Eggers cooked up with The Lighthouse and reflecting on my take away and interpretation of the story, it's one of my favorite movies of the year. This is why I love art so much; to really take a masterpiece like this in, to tear apart and pick at internally like a seagull, and then flatulate how I feel about it.
