The Absurdist Sci-Fi Novel at the End of the Universe

I will be the first to admit that I am biased in the case of this book. It's been one of my absolute favorites ever since my father gave me a copy of the full omnibus edition at the age 12 or 13. I've lost the dust jacket, the pages are beginning to go off color, and the cover's bright blue has faded and worn, but I still return to it over a decade later.

Douglas Adams writes the kind of humorous prose that stands the test of time. His characters are explosively large in their personalities (and appearances), and every adventure is fresh and surprising.

I will say, the plot does tend to ramble and there's not really much in the way of tight narrative arcs, but to my mind, they aren't missed.

Wow, wow, wow!! I really loved this book more than I thought I would. For the first few chapters, I couldn't understand what the hype was all about. However, as I got more in to the book, I understood.

The pacing is fantastic!! I had a hard time stepping away from the book to do real life things. The prose is also amazing!

I loved Celaena's sarcasm the most. I found myself laughing out loud at some of her remarks. I found her to be a very good character =) She was definitely a well-formed character and wasn't some meek little girl.

I also loved Dorian and Choal. I won't say too much because of spoilers, but they were fantastic!!

All of the characters were well-rounded and felt real.

Do NOT give this book a miss. It is definitely a book you will want to read =)

I enjoyed this book, more than I expected in the beginning. it's been on my tbr list for a while and I was excited to finally read it but it didn't hook me from the start like I'd hoped. I stuck with it and as the action picked up I couldn't put it down. I would have liked a little more backstory on bea and babs and vassa's mom and I think vassa herself could have used a little more development but overall I was pleased with the story. Even tho it's based on a Russian folk story I think it stands alone for those, like myself, who aren't familiar with the original. the characters are unique and beautiful prose is scattered throughout. the ending was nicely done, tying things up but also leaving it open for a sequel should the author choose to write one.

If you have a weak stomach then read at your own peril

Since I'm torn between four stars and five stars then I will give this crazy read four and 1/2 stars. I don't think that crazy is the correct term for what I need. This read had some sick and repulsive scenes .... definitely some of the best I've encountered in some time and contains just the right amount of evil and chaos that pushes your mind into boundary lines that you never knew existed. I recommend you read this book when you have the time to do it all in one sitting because if it hadn't been for prior commitments, that's exactly what I would have done... read it all in one day. The author's writing style and descriptive prose make this a MUST read. However, if you have a weak stomach then read at your own peril.
