ClareR (5603 KP) rated The Dangerous Kind in Books
Mar 27, 2019 (Updated Mar 27, 2019)
1 in 100 People
This was such an enjoyable book - the subject matter however, was very uncomfortable. The story is set in the present day and 2002. In the present day, a radio presenter for Radio 4 and former newspaper reporter, Jessamine, presents a programme about potentially dangerous people, and whether there had been signs of their violence in the past. In 2002, we follow a 13 year old girl called Rowan, who is in care. She becomes involved with some very disturbing men. Paedophiles. Nothing is described explicitly, but anyone with any kind of imagination will be able to fill in the gaps from the descriptions we’re given.
This was such a well written book - there was an underlying feeling of menace through both timelines that made me feel very uncomfortable (which was no bad thing as it really added to the experience!) and the main characters had me fighting in their corners throughout.
I’m a big fan of the ‘literary twist’, and this certainly delivered. This book is well worth your time and money, I highly recommend it!
Many thanks to The Pigeonhole and the author for reading along with her readers.
And the 1 in 100 refers to those who are likely to go on to commit some sort of violent criminal act. Not such a nice thought....

David McK (3251 KP) rated The War of the Worlds in Books
Jun 16, 2019
HG Wells seminal tale of alien invasion, that has laid the template for many an alien invasion movie afterwards (and I'm paraphrasing here):
"There's no war between us and them, any more than there is between us and ants"
Victorian set, and told mainly through the eyes of a journalist who witnesses all the events, from the arrival of the Martians through to their attack and eventual defeat (I'll give nothing away here how, except to say that the movie Independence Day tried an updated version of the same solution), this is also - or so legend says - responsible for mass panic in the States when the radio adaptation was first broadcast.

Erika (17788 KP) rated Neverwhere in Books
Jun 19, 2018
Gaiman is very hit or miss for me. I've only really liked one book.
I really disliked Neverwhere when I first read it, it took me forever to get through, and I really liked the idea of the novel, just not the execution. But, yes, I am rating this an 8. The reason for this high of a rating is the BBC production of this book with James McAvoy. That radio adaption made me like it so much more, and I've now listened to it twice.
After this, I decided to only audiobook or get BBC productions of Gaiman's novels, but thus far, it's still been a bust.

loren_ (4 KP) rated Radio Silence in Books

Wonderfully crafted story with warm (and cold) touches.
Radio Silence is a perfect book for any student going into University or A-Levels. Touching on subjects such as identity and sexuality, we see how young Frances deals with her life and the trials that come with it.
After kissing Carys, a friend who disappeared, and befriending her brother, Frances must go on and attempt to complete her first year of A-levels. Within the story, there are doubts, congratulations and cold hard truths that many students dont know of.
As the tagline says, what if everything you set yourself up to be was wrong?

Bong Mines Entertainment (15 KP) rated See the Stars - Single by Adrian Jean in Music
Jun 6, 2019
Adrian Jean is an up-and-coming LA-based singer-songwriter from Philadelphia. Not too long ago, he released an inspiring R&B tune, entitled, “See the Stars (Radio Edit)”.
Adrian Jean was homeless for two and a half years unbeknownst to his friends and colleagues. He lived in his automobile underneath the famed Hollywood sign and showered at a nearby gym.
His grandmother sensed that something was wrong and begged her grandson to come home to the East Coast. But Adrian was determined to stay in L.A. to fulfill his musical dream.
Therefore, he continued writing songs while sleeping in the backseat, staring down at the lights of Los Angeles. One of the songs that he wrote, entitled, “See The Stars”, found Adrian negotiating leaving home despite his grandmother’s disapproval.
‘See the Stars (Radio Edit)’ contains a relatable storyline, ear-welcoming vocals, and vibey instrumentation flavored with contemporary R&B and urban-soul elements.
Adrian Jean has led a tumultuous life which has taken him from the poorest neighborhoods in Philadelphia to glamorous nightclubs, to homelessness, and redemption.
With an absent father and a mother who was more interested in drugs than raising her children, Adrian was forced to grow up very quickly.
By the age of 15, he was living on his own and working for a drug dealer. Later, he struggled with the pressures of being a bisexual man in a culture that didn’t accept such differences.

Seamless play
We've come so far since vinyl
I pay monthly for the premium option. My passion is vinyl and at a cost of around £20 a month for one vinyl, Spotify is a world of new information for less cost.
With many features including discover, which can generate a playlist based on sounds you have enjoyed that week. The opportunity to find new music is totally in your hands.
I have found bands months before they hit the radio. Been to intimate gigs I would never have had the same experience in, was it not for discovering new unsigned bands on Spotify.
Music has come a long way.
