Three years ago, Carol Starkey lost her partner and lover when a bomb exploded. Heck, she almost lost her life herself, and she has lived with the scars, real and emotional, from it ever since. Now she is tasked with solving the murder of another LAPD bomb squad member killed by a bomb. The ATF thinks it was the work of Mr. Red, a serial bomber. Can Carol catch him?

The mystery itself in this book is strong, and I enjoyed the twists and turns as we went along. However, I had a real problem with Carol. She was a walking cliché of the hard-boiled mystery genre right down to her chain smoking, secret drinking, and hard to like personality. Her character arc was a cliché as well, but I finally did find myself caring about her toward the end of the book.

Good but could've been so much more
Although the plots are nowhere near identical (long life vs reborn) this book really reminds me of The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August. But sadly more of a poorer cousin.

Don't get me wrong, it's a great idea for a story and it's done fairly well. Tom is a loveable main character (even if the surname of Hazard is just silly) and the book keeps you interested and reading throughout. The problem is that despite trying hard, there isn't enough threat or intrigue or real danger to really hook you completely. It tries, but its more of a weak effort and the ending comes rather abruptly without warning and without any real satisfaction. Its a shame as the rest of the story is very good, and it hasn't put me off reading any of Matt Haig's other books, as he is a promising author.

First Jewel Book
I had no expectation when I picked this book up. I knew about the author but I didn't read any reviews about this book. And when I started it I didn't want to put it down I wanted to finish it.
Holly Black does an amazing job mixing the human side into the fairy side. She writes it like fairies could possibly be right. There were surprises in the book that I didn't see coming but I was happy for. The action and the emotion in the book makes you actually feel for the character like they are real.
I think the best part to this book and all of Holly's books is she doesn't make a realistic character she makes a realistic world. She puts in real world situations that actually happen and it brings the story to life even more.
Darkest Part Of the Forest, is in my Jewel Collection.
