I think this book was great !
The main characters are sweet, they have to deal with real life problems (which would be good conversation starters) and they have hearts to save all different types of animals! I would definitely recommend reading it for middle school grade kids because of the length.
I volunteered to read this book in return for my honest feed back from Just Read Tours. The thoughts and opinions expressed within are my own.

Dark and funny
Found this book as a fluke and I've loved the series ever since, yes some of the themes can be quite dark but the characters are fantastic and really got involved with them, they also lighten the tone a little from really dark bits. Doesn't always paint a great picture of Scottish people but I enjoy reading it and laughing at parts which are actually how people are in real life

"Once again, we see sex and death wed like chocolate and peanut butter. Jane Fonda looks like the angel of bitter, angry suicide girls before such girls were ever born. Bruce Dern plays the psycho hillbilly we loved him playing in ‘The Big Valley’ on television. Gig Young claws his way to the bottom of the bottom-feeders, winning the Oscar just before his own real-life suicide. Here’s my favorite “date movie” of all time."

"For a period of time, I thought I might only make documentaries. Films like Gimme Shelter had a lot to do with this attitude. Why make narrative work when real life was so interesting? I loved the Maysles approach to filming; I loved the Rolling Stones during that period; I loved the controversy surrounding the film. It still kind of seems like the perfect movie. Anytime this is playing in the theater, I try to see it."

"Reality check. The last time I saw it was with my wife and several friends. We are all about the same age, have elderly parents, or have lost our parents in the last couple of years. After the movie, we talked about our parents and how we had treated them. Everyone felt guilty for days. I studied the disc of documentaries, and treasure the Ozu films in my collection. “Real life intrudes just when you’re making other plans.”"
