Interesting but a little too ambiguous
This is a strange film. For the most part it’s a very interesting gothic drama, and creates a lot of intrigue as you try to figure out what’s going on. Sam Claflin and Rachel Weisz do very well, but I found the film and the goings on a little too ambiguous. The ending left me a little unsatisfied and it wasn’t exactly unpredictable either. For me, the most frustrating thing was how quickly he fell for Rachel’s charms. Literally within minutes of her arriving he seemed to lose all of his prior hostility - not exactly realistic.

A life or death struggle for survival has never been so dull. Adrift (2018) #Review
The lure of a life of freedom on the open ocean is an easy one to understand, at least when the sea is a beautiful blue expanse, stretching out to an endless horizon. But the romantic picture postcard ideal doesn’t last long for Tami Oldham (Shailene Woodley) and Richard Sharp (Sam Claflin) when their trans-Pacific voyage is interrupted by Hurricane Raymond with devastating results.

There’s no doubting how harrowing the ordeal that Tami Oldham Ashcraft went through was, but this bland Instagram melodrama barely manages to scratch the surface...

So many people have seen this and I'm sure theres lots of different views on this so don't judge me. I'm not a girly girl by any means but wow this film makes me cry EVERY. BLUMMIN. TIME. Some bits you can see coming but the ending is something that I still hope will change (LOL). Sam Claflin and Amelia Clarke are just such amazing Actors i cannot imagine anyone else being about to play the characters as perfectly as they do.
A good tear jerker, it's so sweet, you can forgive the crying.

Personally, I really liked this film. It was funny, the plot moved quickly, the characters were sound and the twist wasn't as noticeable as I originally thought. I am glad I didn't see it in theaters, but I'm glad I watched it overall. I wasn't disappointed. Kristin Stewart's Sabina was probably my favorite character. I thought Sam Claflin was hilarious, though he never fails to make me laugh. Naomi Scott first came on my radar when she was in Lemonade Mouth on the Disney Channel and I loved that film and have loved her since so to see her in a film like this, with a great cast, female-led, directed by a female, I was extremely happy.

This is definitely not a film to make you think, to make you ask questions, nothing deep. It's definitely a fun movie that you can just throw on and not have to work too hard to follow. I really enjoyed it, so take that for what it's worth.

Disappointing
Whilst the trailer for this didn't wow me, it made me think this film had enough promise to warrant watching. However the end result was rather disappointing.

Cast wise this wasn't bad. Sam Claflin, Eleanor Tomlinson and Olivia Munn are always watchable, although i really can't stand Aisling Bea. The setting and scenery in this are absolutely beautiful, but then you can't really go wrong with Rome. The main problem with this film is the premise of the concept doesn't meet expectations, and the whole thing just isn't particularly funny. It sounds like it should be something similar to Groundhog Day or Edge of Tomorrow, but without spoiling it, it's a bit of letdown. And the laughs are sadly lacking. There are few smart witty quips that raised a smile, but not the full on romcom the trailer promised. Even the romance was rather dull and predictable.

Not one I'd bother to watch again and almost instantly forgettable. There are much better romcoms out there.

Gothic Victorian suspense surrounding the mysterious Rachel
This film is no doubt atmospheric and evocative, rather than old fashioned Victorian horror, all about the widow of recently deceased cousin who died under mysterious circumstances.

Sam Claflin plays the vengeful nephew, who plots to find out the truth about Rachel, believing that she murdered his guardian. But his feelings become complicated as he finds himself falling under the beguiling spell of her charms.

Daphne Du Maurier was an excellent writer of course and many of her novels have been transferred to both the big and small screen to much acclaim. As it is, this is a film of intrigue and intent that is not quite what it at first seems. The outcome is not mind-blowing and you don't have to be Hercule Poirot to follow the plot or work things out. However, the 'did she didn't she murder' question is left rather open-ended and down to the interpretation/thoughts of the viewer. While it is not in the same league as Rebecca, the director makes a decent effort in creating an uneasy ambience.

It is a fascinating film which delves (in a shallow way) into the workings of the human mind and its psychological ways and how suspicion can play havoc in relationships.
