David McK (3633 KP) rated Hal Spacejock 2: Second Course in Books

Earlier this year, I picked up a novel (re)named '[b:Hal Spacejock 1: A robot named Clunk|12381591|Hal Spacejock 1 A robot named Clunk|Simon Haynes|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1524681176s/12381591.jpg|1083521].
I enjoyed it, but thought it was nothing special.
Recently, I saw an advert on Facebook (I think), for the first three of the Hal Spacejock (yes, that's the real name of one of the characters!) novels and a bonus short story for 99pence. As I'd been reading a lot of heavier fare recently, and as it was only 99p, I thought I would pick it up.
And, I have to say, I enjoyed this one (the second in that collection) more than I remember enjoying the first, complete with a few actually laughed-out-loud moments!

Outstanding!
This falls just short of a true masterpiece. I felt there was no need to reference bruce wayne in the film at all or show the death of his parents as most avid fans will already know the deal but i can see why this may have been done for a new audience. There were a few things that I love about this movie...you show this to someone who has never heard or seen it and you could believe it was a film made 20 even 30 years ago. The other is that even if you don't like comic book movies, you could still enjoy this as a film about a struggling man in society. Saw it twice and was just as mesmerising the 2nd time.
David McK (3633 KP) rated Mary Poppins Returns (2018) in Movies

It's arguable that Disney take a big risk in making a sequel to one of their most beloved movies (and the one that Walt Disney himself saw as their pinnacle), decades after the original, and with a different actor (Emily Blunt) taking on the role most associated with Julie Andrews.
And, while it's enjoyable enough, this doesn't really hold a candle to that original, despite Emily Blunt giving it her all (and, from what I remember, portraying a somewhat 'softer' Mary Poppins).
The structure is pretty similar to the first film, complete with a last-minute rush to the bank, with the film again focusing on the Banks family: the 2 children from the original now grown up, with worries and a family of their own providing the McGuffin that gets Mary Poppins to return.

Love in a good form
I loved the book that this movie is based on so, so much. It was one of the best books that I read in 2018 along with it's sequel Leah on the Offbeat. And this was one of the best movies that I saw in 2018. The acting is superb and it's so relevant to today's society and culture with the pop culture references of Harry Potter, Brendon Urie, and even a Hamilton Easter Egg which I enjoyed. It also touches your heart and has a lot of themes to do with family at the very core and learning to let people see you for who you really are

Overall, I do not think the prequels are all that bad. They're not the best, but, I still find them watchable. My family, in preparation for the Rise of Skywalker, have been re-watching the Skywalker Saga.
Yes, some of the lines are strange, like the sand thing. BUT, that chase of Zam after the 2nd assassination attempt on Padme? One of the best sequences in the film. Seeing Yoda lightsaber duel for the first time? I remember the gasps in the theater (I probably saw it at least 6x in theaters).
The romance is cringe-worthy, but it has to happen. Had I been watching it by myself, I'd have skipped those chapters.
Also, this film introduced the Clones, which led to the fantastic Clone Wars series.

How far would you go to get your into the movie business?
I first saw this on TV some years ago. It’s also known as The Buddy Factor in some countries. I just love it so much. I know Kevin Spacey is a dirty word these days, but his acting in this as Buddy Ackerman, head of Production is just so good! Psychotic sex maniac, obsessed with hair loss.
Add to this Frank Whaley as Guy, the newbie assistant to Buddy, is put through hell hoping to get a screenplay produced. Add to this Dawn, producer, Guys new girlfriend, producer and ex Buddy squeeze and you get a recipe of disaster.
It’s just funny but also appalling tale of Hollywood film production.

Shocking true story
At the end of the second world war Germany was on it's knees. People were looting jut to survive. Willi Herold was one such person. A deserter paratrooper, he was caught and chased by an officer and manages to escape where he finds an abandoned car and in the back a Captains uniform which he dons and takes the identity of. What follows is like an adults Lord of the Flies. This is a dark piece of history and hard to believe it is true. The director chooses ways of showing him surrounded by lunacy as they slip more and more into lunacy and darkness.
Brilliant film of a story I didn't even know about until I saw it.

Erika (17789 KP) rated The Warrior Queen of Jhansi (2019) in Movies

I love period films, but I'm not sure this one was up to snuff. I saw the trailer and was immediately interesting. I'm all about historical girl power, when it's legitimate.
The main character, Lakshmibai, was obviously the best part of the film. The story was interesting, but ultimately the acting was sub-standard, excluding the main character.
Devika Bhise, who played Lakshmibai, had the best performance. Though, I found it interesting that she wasn't top billed. It actually bothered me, and I just had to look up who she was on IMDB: she's the 6th actor listed, despite being the lead character. There's something up with that...
Anyway, I would only recommend this if you're very, very interested in the story. I'll probably find a book on the Warrior Queen of Jhansi.

Good Work Detective
Saw V- this frachise is keeping me on a loop, so many twist and turns, im on the edge of my seat, cause its soo good. This franchsie is keeping me questioning everything about the charcters, john and his motivation, the detective's, the victims, so many questions and so many unexpected answers, that you wont see coming from a mile away. I love this franchise.
The Plot: Despite the fact that fiendish serial killer Jigsaw is dead, his work lives on through a new apprentice, Lieutenant Mark Hoffman, a cop who appeared to be hot on the murderer's trail. As fellow lawman Agent Peter Strahm begins to suspect Hoffman is Jigsaw's protégé, the fledgling killer sets out to dispose of him.
What will happened next, i will soon find out. Cant wait.

Definitely one to read.
I can honestly say since school I have only read two books, they don't interest me. I am more of a movie guy. This book however I saw on my way to bed and I randomly read the first page. I was hooked.
Amazing story about a young girl who is convinced people from a t.v show is harming her sexually. She is petrified to talk cause spiders have ears, she is at a loss until she meets Torey Hayden an author that writes from her own experiences, she works with all kinds of children. As this mystery novel unfolds it kept me breathless I couldn't believe what I was reading, it was awful but every story has a happy ending, definitely a 10/10!
