David McK (3600 KP) rated The Old Guard (2020) in Movies

The Old Guard (2020)
The Old Guard (2020)
2020 | Action, Fantasy
Netflix's newest (at the time of writing) action-adventure, starring Charlize Theron as the leader of a group of immortals (whose immortality can come and go at any point) that have been alive for centuries, if not (in her case) for millennia. Think a less Scottish Highlander, and with the immortals working together rather than trying to chop each others heads off.

Apparently based on a relatively-new comic series, you can also tell that this is a straight-to-TV affair, with it not *quite* having the budget or flair of a Hollywood film. It's also unclear just what happens if any of these immortals lose a limb - does it grow back?

Anyway, the driving force behind this is the discovery of a new immortal, just after the other's last mission goes sideways, with Big Pharma - in a plot development that will surprise no one - now out to see if they can extract the secret of their immortality from the group (who don't know it themselves).

Also definitely set up for a sequel: if it is half as good as this one, I'll be watching.

Sequel to David Gemmell's earlier Lion of Macedon, with more emphasis on the mystical elements this time around: whereas that earlier novel was perhaps 90/10 in favour of history, this is (IMO) closer to 40/60.

As the novel starts, Alexander is but a 4 year old and Parmenion is out of favour with Philip of Macedon, who is jealous of the Spartan general's success in battle. Alexander is still plagued by the Chaos Spirit, and - at around the 1/4 mark - is magically transported into an alternate Greece, where the myths and monsters of Greek legend are all real. With a little help from Aristotle and the Siptrassi stones, Parmenion is soon off on a rescue mission, accompanied by Philip's assassin Attalus (without Philips knowledge). The bulk of this novel - parts 2 and 3 (of 4) - then takes place in that alternate Greece, with Parmenion - again - reliving his past and playing a key role in proceedings, before it returns to 'our' Greece for the final part of the novel.

As is standard for Gemmell, lots of musing on the nature of Good and evil throughout, and with a conflicted central protagonist.

This is a gruesome and dark thriller and it's great!!

I must say though that if you're a bit squeamish and don't like graphic descriptions of murder, then don't read this. If you do or don't mind a bit of gore, then crack on.

The characters are great, the plot is absorbing and complex and the ability of the author to capture the feelings of the various protagonists is excellent.

I absolutely love a good "baddie" and Nadine Matheson has created one such character in Peter Olivier; he is deliciously evil, extremely charming, highly intelligent, an excellent manipulator and everything you would want in a (fictitious) serial killer ... think Ted Bundy crossed with Jeffrey Dahmer and you have a pretty good picture.

This is a gripping read which although starts a little slow, it builds in tension and action as you turn the pages culminating in an exciting finale which definitely leaves the door open for a sequel and the intriguing backstory lends itself to a prequel ... well I would certainly read either or both!

Thank you to HQ (an imprint of HarperCollins UK) and NetGalley for my copy in return for an honest and unbiased review.

Drag Me to Hell (2009)
Drag Me to Hell (2009)
2009 | Comedy, Horror
I'll say one thing for certain, Drag Me to Hell is so unnecessarily and gratuitously gross at times (the old woman has the poor girls entire chin in her disgusting mouth on more than one occasion) and in that regard, it's a warm welcome back to over the top horror for Sam Raimi. His signature style is plastered all over the place, and it's great.

The cheesiness isn't a complete positive however. In terms of dialogue, it can take you out of the story a bit. Lead Alison Lohman and co star Justin Long (both actors who I like) suffer from this a bit, and are occasionally comical in a movie that plays it straight for the most part.
Some of the effects are a little iffy as well. There's some good practical stuff going on but a few digital effects are dodgy. It's not enough to severely impact anything, and there a few decent jump scares scattered throughout.

It's a perfectly fine slice of horror, that is elevated by a ballsy as fuck ending, that makes Drag Me to Hell a film worth revisiting now and again. Would love to see a sequel someday!

A sexually enlightened page turner!!

This is a purely adult read, not just because of some fun sex scenes, but from a few sensitive topics being raised... Spoiler : drug addiction (not Angelique!) and an assault.

I was hooked from the very first page. I really like Angelique, being inside her head is fun and interesting. She has an intoxicating confidence about her and knows how to make the most of, and enjoy, life. I also like how this isn't written like a diary, more like having a chat with a friend, so feels more natural and flows better.
Angelique is a bit of an inspiration, she knows what she wants and isn't afraid to go for it.
I can't believe we've been left with, not a cliffhanger as such, but a few loose ends....that grabbed me.....I need more!!! I need to know how things turn out. So with that in mind, I think I'd like it to be a bit longer or fingers crossed there's a sequel....... especially as the clear winner of douche bag of the year needs to have a good bit of comeuppance!!

Final Destination 3 (2006)
2006 | Action, Drama, Horror
Rather chintzy and objectively garbo but a complete and utter blast almost from start to finish. Just plain cruel, reeks with the stench of death - whereas in the others the characters pretty much all reacted to impending demise with paranoia and/or denial, here we see them react with sardonicism, competitiveness, and even boredom. The deaths nor the effects aren't as good but this is infinitely better than the second one because the melodrama filler is actually back to being semi-entertaining (if never 'real movie' status) and has some pretty interesting musings about death's presence in these films. The whole product seems rushed out the door but has a good talking + dying ratio and it's also super funny with as enjoyable characters as can be expected for a mid-2000s horror sequel with none of the original cast. Plus the acting's decent again! Feels like Wong is winging it but even most half-assed Wong products look better than Ellis at his best. The tanning beds are one of the elite deaths in the entire franchise - and then the smash cut to the coffins right after? Lmfao, dug it.

Seeing and enjoying the peculiar adventure of sharkboy and Lavagirl as a young teen a sequel was always wanted, when first advertised I had another Sonic The Hedgehog movie moment like "OH NO"

As a father with two monsters of my own who love sharkboy & Lavagirl they watched this before me and edged me to watch it with them...

Anyway, graphics continued from SB&LG was an appreciated touch as million dollar graphics don't always make the movie (although they help) a random casting with cute but weak acting and a plot unworthy of it's predecessor, we can be heroes is a nostalgic walk down memory lane that is both family friendly, fun (at least were the adult heroes are involved) and is more like a preschool edition of Disney's Sky High movie.

Best thing about the movie was the return of original Lavagirl actress Taylor dooley.

Appreciate the effort by Netflix, but maybe something more for the original fans next time around.

Plot: children of heroes attempt to rescue captured parents from an "evil" alien invasion ......or something like that.

1980 | Fantasy, Sci-Fi
The perfect sequel
Just like it's predecessor, The Empire Strikes Back is a hugely important sci-fi classic. The first two Star Wars films changed the face of cinema forever!

Everything that makes A New Hope so enjoyable is present and correct in TESB, but bigger and better in everyway.
All of the main characters are charming - it's easy to see why they have such a cult following.
The second time around, were given much more back story to already established characters (including the infamous mother of all twists), and we're introduced to new characters, such as Lando, Yoda, and Boba Fett, who all quickly became fan favourites.

We're also introduced to new locations, showing off gorgeous cinematography at every opportunity - places like Bespin, and Hoth (where one of my favourite set pieces of the whole saga takes place).
John Williams score is once again flawless, easily one of the best movie scores of all time.

The movie also ends on a huge cliffhanger, and no matter how many times I see TESB, I'm always ready to move on to the next chapter immediately.
It's a timeless classic.

Welcome to peach trees
Welcome to Mega-City One, a self contained city, with over 400 million citizens where the only law enforcers are the Judge's who are Judge, Jury & executioner. Filled with mega-structures.

Peach Trees is a 200 Floor mega-structure housing tower, the block is home to more than 75,000 citizens & is Notorious for its crime rate.

Whilst investigating a homicide with rookie Judge with a powerful psychic ability legendary Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) becomes the Target of a vicious and violent Hunt by the Ma-Ma clan when she put the tower into Lockdown!

Karl Urban's portrayal of the comic book Legend and his decision to remain faithful to the character made this movie one not to miss and although the box office was not as successful as it should have been, it has become a cult Hit with audiences all over the world.
Dredd is dark, gritty, well thought out, with a great plot fantastic action and gave us a dredd who doesn't remove his helmet.

Highly recommended.
