Anne Tyler’s fans were worried that her 2015 novel “A Spool of Blue Thread” might have been her last. How pleased and thankful are we all that she hasn’t gone into retirement because she just couldn’t stop writing? Her newest novel also takes us back to Baltimore (with a couple of short sidetracks) to hear Willa’s story; a woman who drifted through her 60 years of life, until a total stranger calls her, putting her on a path that will change everything. My review of this charming novel is on my blog now. Thanks for the free book, @prhinternational!

"A teacher gave me Flannery O’Connor’s short story collection in the ninth grade. I grew up in a small town where girls were taught to be polite and not laugh too loud or talk too much or show interest in anything that might scare away the boys. It was a revelation to read O’Connor’s work. Here was a woman from a small Georgia town (like me!) who in direct contravention to her sex and social class was writing the kinds of stories that I was not only interested in reading, but wanted to start writing myself. Her bravery and clarity of vision laid an early foundation for my own work."

*I received this book from the author*

For such a short story, it was really good. It threw in a couple of surprises along the way too, which is something the author is really good at doing.

It was great using the idea of Dickens' Christmas Carol to write a vampire's life. The past, when he was turned and caused the death of his girlfriend, to the present where he's about to do something that will change him forever, to the future where he's shocked by the bad things that might happen because of him.

Really liked it. Thank you, Cynthia, for the chance to read it :)

I can't believe that I haven't logged this movie before. This movie has been in my list of top five movies of all time since I watched it, and almost nothing has been able to topple it. This film is so brilliant and amazing. I absolutely love the insane amount of time that Nolan spent on making this film as perfect as it is. I could rant about this film forever, but I'll keep it short. I love the characters, the story is fantastic, and I get something new out of it each time that I watch it. I can't even count how many times I've seen it.

I don’t want to give away the plot line as it will spoil the story for those that choose to read this book. But what I will say is all is not what it seems, and that’s evident from very early on...

Whilst I found the book to be well written, and not heavily wordy, I did find myself struggling in places, wishing the chapters would go by quicker than they were. Mid-book felt a little like wading in quicksand. And then the action jumped in towards the end.

I also found it difficult to relate or empathise with the characters.

But still an enjoyable short read overall!

Missed this at the cinema last year, it didn't get a long run. Now on Disney+ the cast is really good and the trailer looked promising. You get the story as told from 3 different perspectives of the main characters, this does lead to a lot of repetition of some scenes. The battle scenes are good if very short, not on the scale of other films like Gladiator. Adam Driver really stands out above the others in this. A decent film but just a fair bit longer than it needed to be.
