Let me preface this by saying that I have loved, loved, LOVED the X-Men movies up to this point, so I was really looking forward to this one. So disappointing. It is a great looking movie, as are its predecessors, but that's about where the good stops for me. I was bored, I was irritated, the whole thing was all over the place...and can we just agree that Sophie Turner is not a great actress? Very one note. đź‘Ž

I know my body was present during this impossibly dull super hero outing in a dying franchise, but I couldn’t honestly tell you much about what happened… I was so out of my mind bored by every detail. The character of Jean Grey / Dark Phoenix has the potential to soar, as it almost did in the original X-Men trilogy, when the character was played by Famke Janssen, but in the hands of Sophie Turner and director Simon Kinberg you have to wonder if it was possible to fuck it up any more given the budget? Turner is fine as a TV supporting actress, but I am afraid her cinematic future is as limited as her talent – she has almost no presence, which is a problem for a superhero. I mean, it’s colourful enough and there are some decent flash pop action bits… but the pace, structure, momentum and… point of it all is all over the place. For very, very staunch X-Men fans only. Shame.

When Sophie discovers an alicorn - an extremely rare and valuable animal - she winds up with the job of training it. That would be hard enough, but she still hasn't recovered physically from being kidnapped, and more danger is coming to her new home.

It took a little bit to get back into this complex world, but once I did, I was once again immersed completely. The characters are great and the story is a page turner. Read the first one first, but definitely read these books. They are great for all ages.

Story
Underwhelming end to the arc
So after X-Men First Class we got Days of Future Past, which led to Apocalypse, and now Dark Phoenix, While the first three were good entertaining movies, and even though Apocalypse wasn't the strongest it still entertained, and the came Darl Phoenix, which is sadly and wholly underwhelming 1 hour 54 minutes.

Sophie Turner should have shined in the film, the performance felt stilted and in place, painful to watch, the knock on effect from this, you feel no empathy for Jean Grey.

One scene is more laughable than tense when Jean/Dark Phoenix with with Erik/Magneto.

As the house of mouse now owns Fox I suspect a reboot may not be as far away with, on general, Disney / Marvel knowing how to do a great superhero movie.
