Awix (3310 KP) rated Star Cops in TV

Jul 12, 2020 (Updated Jul 12, 2020)
Star Cops
Star Cops
1987 | Crime, Sci-Fi
Underrated attempt at a proper science fiction series from the BBC. In the far-off year of 2027, British copper Nathan Spring takes command of the International Space Police Force, responsible for law and order on the Moon and aboard the various space stations. Psychological and political issues prove to be as tricky as the actual crimes, though...

Clearly made on a punishingly low budget, and the vision of the future is occasionally a bit wonky from a modern perspective, but the five episodes written by series creator Chris Boucher are some of the best, most intelligent, wittiest and most cynical SF ever broadcast by the BBC. The other episodes not so much: everything gets a bit campy and there are a lot of national stereotypes on display. (Plus, the theme tune has been called the worst in TV history, and most of the incidental music is rubbish too.) Even when it's not particularly good, it's always trying to do something a bit different, and David Calder is consistently excellent as Spring. Not the first nor the last SF or fantasy show to be cut loose by the BBC before it had a chance to realise its potential.

David McK (3207 KP) rated Anna (2019) in Movies

Anna (2019)
Anna (2019)
2019 | Action, Thriller
I'm not sure why, but ever since 2010's 'Salt' I've been noticing more and more of this type of thriller film, with glamorous actresses (and models) becoming the star, and with them nearly all set during the Cold War: Atomic Blonde and Red Sparrow both spring to mind.

This is Luc Besson's entry into that oeuvre, with Russian model Sasha Luss taking on the title role, initially forced to work for KGB and now looking for an escape from her (new) life: Russian Dolls within Russian dolls are a perfect metaphor for this film!

Probably the most famous of criminal duos is Bonnie and Clyde. Their spree of murder and theft ended up with a shoot-out that ended their young lives in the spring of 1934. In her debut novel, Jenni Walsh attempts to paint a fictional portrait of the woman who made up half of this team, from the sketchy information available, and no small amount of innovative flights of fancy on Walsh's part. Read my review of this historical fiction novel in my review here.

"Full disclosure: Samantha Irby is my real life actual friend, but that’s only because I was so rabidly obsessed with her perfect, brilliant, peerlessly funny writing that I flew to Chicago and forced her to love me, so I think that hardly counts as a traditional conflict of interest. I was a fan FIRST. This book doesn’t come out until March, but I was lucky enough to read an early manuscript, and it’s exactly the collection of new Samantha Irby essays you’ve been yearning for, the perfect spring promise to keep you trucking through the winter."

"Dorothy Norwood came from the gospel group the Caravans. She’s one of the great gospel luminaries who could just bring a song to life. She sang these songs with such great, passionate gospel fervor. “What does it take to deliver a proper gospel medley? “I would tell them maybe this year, or some time in the spring, come to my class, and they can learn all. I’m going to be doing some teaching somewhere here in the Detroit area. And I expect probably to do something from Carnegie Hall, a master class from Carnegie Hall. And I’d love to do that"

Set a couple of months after the movie ends, Veronica is hired to find a college student who vanished from a party during spring break. With the tourist industry in town losing money, can Veronica find this girl?

The plot was worth of the franchise with some great twists and turns. The characters were also true to themselves, and I loved spending time with them. My only real complaint was that I missed the snark of Veronica's voiceover narration from the TV show and movie.

This is the original leaf so the design is a bit clunkier than the urban, but it is still far more stylish and versatile than other trackers like the Fitbit. It can be worn on a necklace, leather bracelet, or clipped onto your clothing. Its unique wood and metal design definitely attract attention.

The app developers are continuously adding more new features that makes this a unique tracker. It can also be used with the Spring water bottle to track your water intake. The drawback is that it requires a watch type battery rather than a rechargeable battery that can be docked.

I wasn't sure what to expect of this book. Was it a memoir of the author? A history of the Arab Spring? A history of archaeology in Egypt?
Well, it was all of the above, and I'm not sure I dug it. I minored in archaeology, so that was the main reason I read it. I knew somewhat of the Geo-political situation in that area of the world, but I avoid a lot of current events.
Don't get me wrong, Hessler is a great writer. However, I didn't sign up for a memoir.
It was an interesting mesh of all three subjects, I'm not sure it strictly worked.

"I could have easily filled this list with ten Bergman movies. (Cries and Whispers, Fanny and Alexander, The Magician, Persona, Sawdust and Tinsel, The Seventh Seal, Smiles of a Summer Night, Through a Glass Darkly, The Virgin Spring, Wild Strawberries—there, I did it anyway.) His filmic artistry, his seriousness of purpose, his love of actors, and, above all, his literate examinations of the human condition never fail to inspire me. I think I’ve stolen more from Bergman than any other writer. Cries and Whispers is a masterpiece. Visual storytelling, a lean narrative, exacting characterization, formal experimentation—all in the service of painful, honest humanity."
