This is a stand-alone story, set between the events of 'Fool Moon' and 'Grave Peril', and that sees Harry Dresden - Chicago's only professional wizard for hire - off his home turf as he tries to end the curse against a family in a small isolated Missouri town

Doesn't work as a stand-alone book
I'm not sure what to make of this book. It's interesting, but it doesn't work as a stand-alone story, and requires having knowledge and plot of previous books.

The best character is Emma, who is an absolute saint of a woman, trying to be an appropriate mother figure to her very distressed and damaged stepdaughter all the while trying to protect her from gangsters. The first half of the book shows the stepdaughter Tasha living in the streets having run away from a perilous situation and attempting to trust people again. It's okay but a little over the top.

Superb world building, intriguing and clever story telling (0 more)
Not stand alone, the sequel isn't as compelling as the first book, the story is unresolved and the third (and final) book doesn't seem likely to be completed any time soon (0 more)
Quite simply one of the best fantasy books around

Love it
I love how each book in this series could stand alone. The r caps can become a little redundant if you are reading in order but it was extremely practical on Hamilton’s behalf to write the books the way she did.

Characters Coming into Their Own
Poets & Piracy saw the characters becoming distinct from their Firefly counterparts. We started to see some backstory, especially from Tanny as we met some of her family members. The series started to show promise of being a good stand alone fantasy rather than Firefly fan-fiction.

If you are looking for a quick binge watch mini-series, this might be right for you. A murder mystery that keeps you second guessing who committed the murder. I have not read the book, so I can't say how closely it follows the story line, but can stand alone.

Movie Favorite

"I remember being pretty astonished by I Stand Alone, the Gaspar Noé picture. I remember when I saw that one I was pretty astonished — I’d never seen anything that grim before. But also very honest — not gratuitous or trying to get a shock — just very simple and quite and powerful and disturbing."

Can stand alone
A stand-alone, multi POV novel and the 10th novel in the Detective D.D. Warren series.
I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book so I could give an honest review.

I was not my parents' favorite child. I was not even the favorite daughter. Let me say my family has a strange sense of humor so my dad bought me Lisa Gardner's novel "The Other Daughter". I laughed and let the book sit for a few years. When I eventually read it, I knew I found an author I would definitely read again.

Never Tell by Lisa Gardner can stand alone. The multi POV thriller is the 10th novel in her Detective D.D. Warren series. It includes Flora Dane who was first introduced in Find Her, the 8th novel in her Detective D.D. Warren series.

In Find Her, Dane was kidnapped while on spring break and held for 472 days. Since then, she in now working as Warren's unpaid Confidential Informant). The agent who was instrumental in rescuing Dane was FBI Special Agent Kimberly Quincy, daughter of FBI Profiler Pierce Quincy, a main character in Gardner's FBI Profiler series. Kimberly Quincy also returns to assist with Warren's case.

It might be difficult to understand the connections I mentioned if you have not read prior books. The book does stand alone and will make you want to go read the others.
