Merissa (11935 KP) rated Wild Boy (Gay Monsters in Space #2) in Books
Sep 20, 2023
WILD BOY is the second novella in the Gay Monsters in Space series, but it can be read as a standalone.
Connor has had a rough life up until now and trusts nobody. He doesn't see any reason to change that once he gets kidnapped by Krel and told how wonderful everything is going to be from now on. Krel knows all about Connor's past, but he knows Connor is the one for him. He'll just have to show Connor just how much he loves him!
Okay, so if you don't like spankings, you may not like this story. Connors needs them - a lot! And Krel, well, he likes giving them to Connor because it normally leads to other things. Things that are hot and spicy and pleasurable to both parties.
I am thoroughly enjoying this series. The stories are off the charts hot, with great characters, and you don't have to worry about how deep the story is going. Sometimes, that's just what you need!
A great addition to the series and absolutely recommended by me.

Merissa (11935 KP) rated The Quid Pro Quo (The Bradfield Trilogy #2) in Books
Jan 7, 2022 (Updated Jul 5, 2023)
THE QUID PRO QUO is the second book in the Bradfield Trilogy although you could, as I have, read it as a standalone.
It is set in 1920s England where magic comes alive in a not-so-fun way. Walt is the nurse to Sylvia's doctor, and the story starts with them being called to the village duck pond as a body has been found. The mystery unravels as the story progresses, giving you insight into a world 'other' than our own.
This is paced perfectly for a cosy mystery - with questions aplenty until it is all explained nicely and wrapped in a bow. I really want to read books one and three now (even though book three isn't even available yet) just to see where it takes me. The characters are wonderfully relatable and the world is both realistic and nostalgic in a rose-tinted glasses kind of way.
The story and characters held my attention from the beginning and kept me enthralled until the end. Thoroughly enjoyable and absolutely recommended by me.

Merissa (11935 KP) rated Tapped by My Roommate (Thrust Into Love #3) in Books
Sep 9, 2021 (Updated Jul 14, 2023)
TAPPED BY MY ROOMMATE is the third book in the Thrust Into Love series and could easily be read as a standalone as the connection is the college, not the people.
Ethan has just finished with his girlfriend, a real piece of work who had changed the locks before he could get his clothing or his lizard out of there. He ends up staying with Rhett, someone who always seems willing to help. When they share a drunken kiss, Ethan realises he may not be as straight as he thought. But just who will help him with his bi-curiosity?
I really enjoyed this book! Ethan and Rhett are both great characters with lots to learn. They are ably supported by a great cast of supporting characters who help them with their highs and lows.
This was both steamy and sweet. Told from both perspectives, you are with them as they make their own realisations about who they are and what they want.
A fantastic addition to the series and absolutely recommended by me.

Merissa (11935 KP) rated Winter's Heart in Books
Aug 4, 2021 (Updated Jul 17, 2023)
WINTER'S HEART is a standalone novella about a prophecy, a girl, and a tiger. Who doesn't love a story like that?
Whilst there are romantic elements to this story, it isn't the only part. Lisa has been foretold for years as the saviour of the village, even though she has no magic to show for it. When killings start happening, it appears the white tiger is back and Lisa must kill it. Of course, it's not that simple.
I read this book in one sitting and enjoyed most of it. There didn't seem to be any punishment (or explanation) for Herk's behaviour towards Lisa and it was just glossed over after she had a 'word' with him.
The rest of it was better. I loved the descriptions of the village and the forests, especially that of the tiger. I would love to see a follow on from this story, seeing how Lisa and Elijah get on and how their budding romance develops.
A quick coffee break book that I definitely recommend.

Merissa (11935 KP) rated Return of the Runaway Bride in Books
Jul 21, 2021 (Updated Jul 17, 2023)
RETURN OF THE RUNAWAY BRIDE is part of the Last Chance Beach Romance series but can also be read as a standalone. In this one, Emily left Chase at the altar five years ago but has now returned to try and mend bridges. Not only is it time, but she also needs to let her friends and family know what she's been up to as her novel is being made into a movie, and no one knows.
This is a well-paced novel that not only gives the reader what is going on now, but also allows them to catch up on what happened five years ago, and why. There is a good group of characters, both main and supporting, that help to move the storyline along.
The only problem I found was that sometimes the time would jump from one sentence to another. I found this to be slightly jolting but became accustomed to it as the author's writing style.
A great summer story about second-chance romance and recommended by me.

Merissa (11935 KP) rated The Goldilocks Principle in Books
Jul 29, 2023
Goldilocks retelling, MM style
THE GOLDILOCKS PRINCIPLE is a standalone story about Elijah Goldwyn (who has blond curly hair) and Tristan (a French soap actor) who both meet in Provincetown and sparks fly.
The story itself was good and I enjoyed it. It is smoothly paced with a stack of supporting characters that help move it along. The town itself is a charming setting and, in my opinion, Iris, Frank, and Isy were the best characters!
I found it to have quite a bit of 'tell' instead of 'show' though - the whole thing with Quentin, Clara, and the parents, which led to a bit of a disconnect with the main characters. I was unable to immerse myself in the story even though I wanted to. There were also a few parts where I disliked how one of the main characters was acting or behaving.
I think a lot of people will thoroughly enjoy this story, and loved how Goldilocks is brought into this MM Romance. It just wasn't the book for me in the ways I'd hoped.

Merissa (11935 KP) rated Surrounded by Silence (The Rescuer #2) in Books
Nov 25, 2020 (Updated Aug 14, 2023)
SURROUNDED BY SILENCE is the second book in The Rescuer series and while it does feature some of the characters from the first book, can be read as a standalone because the issues raised are discussed in this book.
Sam has reached rock bottom and has realised that for all his billions, he can't buy happiness. He reaches out to the one person he thinks can help and manages to convince him. That is how Sam ends up working in a Soup Kitchen.
I enjoyed this book so much more than the first (sorry, Mr Huffbind!) The writing style is not as stilted and flowed more naturally. The dialogue was more believable and the "I love you's" weren't bandied around as quickly or as often.
The terror that Sam feels toward the end of the book comes across clearly and was extremely well written. The whole problem with learning ASL was also easy to read. As someone who was learning BSL, I know how daunting it can be but also how rewarding.
All in all, this book was completely enjoyable and I have no hesitation in recommending it.
