"Let me say Crazy Heart, because it’s in my head. It’s prompted where my life is going now, because with Crazy Heart, it really fired up all my music. I’ve been doing music since I was a teenager; I put out an album a few years ago and built a label with Michael McDonald and Chris Pelonis. With Crazy Heart, I got to play with my two dear friends, Stephen Bruden and T-Bone Burnett, who I met on Heaven’s Gate, thirty years ago or something like that. With this music that was stirred up with Crazy Heart, now I want to continue doing that. So I’m going to take the rest of the year and get into my music; I’ve formed a little band up in Santa Barbara, where we’ve been playing some local gigs and we’re going to go out and play some more. That’s going to be fun."

"Texan singer-novelist Nanci Griffith doesn't compromise with her audience. I once heard her reverse-heckle a fan shouting out requests, retorting in her Tweety-Bird voice, "I don't come to where you work and yell at you!" Like all her first several albums this one is lyrics-heavy, with folk-country accompaniment (Dobros, lap steel, Bela Fleck's banjo), and the stories take precedence over the genre, to the point where she actually criticises country. The black housewife narrating 'Mary & Omie' reports "And I thank my Omie for taking me out of the South." Take that, Stephen Foster! Like the very different Mother Fist, this 1986 album is dedicated to Truman Capote (among others), and every song is a story song, full of car-jumping daredevils, lovelorn young widows, and of course touring musicians bored in buses, staring out into the endless falling snow. "

Le goings-on spooky in the south of France: a mysterious, apparently sentient cloud which may or may not embody nature's vengeance on civilisation abducts a group of surfers for five hours and then returns them, with strange powers. (Not that the media takes any notice of any of this.) This provides everyone in town with un beaucoup lovely chance to work through all their various personal issues before the end of the last episode.

Comes across a bit like a mid-table Stephen King novel, or possibly just a very glossy soap opera with a guest appearance by Giant Space Monster Dogorah. Fairly engaging stuff, though unlikely to feel terribly original to the clued-up viewer; passes the time nicely without demanding your full attention. Avoids too many explanations (they're clearly hoping for a second season), which could be irritating, but the end-of-series cliffhanger is okay.
