Erika (17788 KP) rated The Boys - Season 1 in TV
Aug 13, 2019
This show is a great contrast to the current superhero movie mania. The Seven, a superhero group headquartered in NYC, are essentially corrupt, and mostly horrible people.
The cast was great, and I hadn't really heard of any of the actors, aside from Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, and Simon Pegg.
Eight episodes were sufficient enough for me, it did drag a little in the beginning for me. But, that cliffhanger was NOT COOL. Thank god they're already filming season 2!

More comedy than action hero
Slightly odd quirky superhero film. I don't know much about comics, so not heard of this character before. This kinda feels like a PG-13 of @Kick-Ass (2010) as a young boy is granted an alter-ego superhero character. Complete with Mark Strong again as the villan. The first half of the film was more fun and enjoyable. It panders out pretty much how you would expect. Fun while it lasts if nothing memorable.
David McK (3207 KP) rated The Samaritan (2022) in Movies
Sep 11, 2022
Sylvester Stallone starring superheroics - his first since Judge Dredd? (not counting cameo in GotG vol 2) - - in which he plays the part of a recluse, who a young boy next door believes to be thought-to-be-dead superhero Samaritan, who supposedly died following a confrontation with his equally superpowered twin brother Nemesis twenty years earlier,
So it's immediately apparent where this one is going.
It's not bad, actually: just not brilliant. Think 90s style superhero films, before the MCU came to be.
Set your expectation accordingly.

I believe that if Unbreakable had been released today instead of nearly 20 years ago, it would have been received much more positively.

Awix (3310 KP) rated Deadpool (2016) in Movies
Feb 19, 2018
Not the first R-rated superhero movie, nor the first superhero comedy film, nor even the first movie to feature Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson, but it does a good job of appearing to do something new and different, and has lots of good jokes. Garrulous mercenary volunteers for special procedure in attempt to fend off terminal illness; basically ends up with cancer as a super-power.
The plot is really very secondary to the style of the film, anyway, which is all about being very irreverent and transgressive towards the perceived conventions of the superhero movie; there's a bit of a straw man argument being made here, but the action is well staged and it is, as mentioned, very funny. Not the future of the genre, no matter what people may say, but a well-crafted piece of entertainment nevertheless.

Movie Metropolis (309 KP) rated X2: X-Men United (2003) in Movies
Jun 10, 2019
Fans had to wait three years for the release of X2, and with it came a much better film in almost every way. By introducing new mutants including Nightcrawler, played fabulously by Alan Cumming, to proceedings, X2 was a triumph in the superhero genre that brought this untested genre into the mainstream. The opening scene in which Nightcrawler tries to assassinate the US President is one of the best action sequences put in a superhero film, with perfect pacing and great tension building.

It's rare that a superhero film has no bad points and you actually care about the supporting characters, this film is just that ,Michelle Pfeiffer looks great (so does evangeline lilly) and Michael Pena adds some really funny comic moments to a film that is already a funny film ,all in all a great sequel to a great superhero film only let down by the character of Ghost ,with an all star supporting cast like michael Douglas and Lawrence Fishburn it's a great way to spend 2odd hrs
