EmersonRose (320 KP) rated The Throne of Fire (Kane Chronicles #2) in Books
Nov 20, 2019
It took me a while to get started on the Kane Chronicles after reading both Percy Jackson series, and although I have been enjoying it, I have been reading it very slowly. Egyptian myth was something I really enjoyed studying in school, and like the Greek myth books, Riordan has done an excellent job of combining research with originality. The books are fun, and I like the sibling main characters. I will be continuing the series soon and hopefully, it won’t take me so long to read the next one.

Natalia (73 KP) rated Ruin and Rising (The Grisha #3) in Books
Jan 26, 2019
Having finished this book just an hour before writing this, I can really feel the effect this book is having on me.
Getting to know these character for two/three books and having that come to an end is utterly heartbreaking in the best way possible. While some questions remain, I have a feeling they'll be answered in the rest of the Grishaverse books, and those that will remain unanswered will either keep me coming back or keep me discussing the possibilities obsessively with the few people I know who've also read the series. Characters have gained depth, and plenty is set up to link in the other works from Bardugo. Even some of the characters that I felt were one-dimensional became well-rounded and have managed to take up their own place in my heart.
Genuinely, I cannot say how I feel about the series coming to an end. The ending itself I love - but to leave this series behind will take a lot of effort on my part.

BobbiesDustyPages (1259 KP) rated Alice (The Chronicles of Alice #1) in Books
Mar 24, 2018
Christina Henry really did create a truly twisted version of Wonderland in Alice and I really loved her take on the characters I've enjoyed since I was just a small child they were dark and crazy and I only wish she would have explored each character a little more.
My favorite character by far was het take in The Caterpillar I would love to read a book just in him his whole part was just so dark and twisted.
The plot while familiar had a lot of great twists though some of it got a bit repetitive at times for me.

Andy R (6 KP) rated Shazam! (2019) in Movies
Oct 17, 2019
Funny, I mean very funny the total premise of the film is amusing and it plays on it alot (2 more)
Story is quite good and characters go on quite an arc
Supporting characters are excellent and are probably what keeps the film going and make it enjoyable
Probably plays on the honour a bit too much which makes the action take a back seat. (1 more)
Film takes quite a while to get going
Good but not brilliant
In the past comic book movies could be deemed as being to serious(batman) but this has changed recently with films like deaspool. Shazam going down this approach with this film being basically a comedy the action takes a back seat. To me the film relays too much on the houmor but the supporting cast and good story make the film quite enjoyable although it does take a little while to get going

Not my favourite superhero action flick
Is it blasphemy to say I didn't think this was a great film? Sometimes the humour seemed to be laid on too thick. And the misogyny just pissed me off. I can never take Ryan Reynolds seriously, he seems to always have the same kind of cocky character in most films. The best part was the subtle jibes against the X-Men universe.

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2103 KP) rated The Horse and His Boy (Chronicles of Narnia, #5) in Books
Mar 9, 2018
A marriage proposal to a grown Susan is really just a plot to take over Narnia, and the only people who can stop it are a run away slave and a talking horse. A fun adventure that has grown on me the more times I've read it.

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2103 KP) rated Death On the Flop (Poker, #1) in Books
Mar 9, 2018
Belinda Cooley is in Vegas with her twin brother. Her brother is going to play in a poker tournament, but before it begins, he vanishes. Belinda must take his place to find him. Fun characters but it stretched credibility too much for me to give it a higher rating.
