I must admit that I didn't read the entire synopsis before jumping on the opportunity to read and review this book. What really drew me in was the cover. What it was about the cover, I can't even begin to explain. However, I am thrilled that I read this. This isn't just all fluffy clouds and happy walks in a meadow; it deals with teenage cruelty and so much more. You really need to sit down and read this well written drama with characters that pull you in and leave you breathless.

There's so much I want to say about this book but it will lead me to sharing way too muh with you and spoiling this fantastic read. Don't pass up reading this and don't just take me at my word; get your copy today and see for yourself.

There's something a little bit ironic, don'cha think, about someone who got his start as a first-wave YouTuber making a film basically criticising the effects of social media on young people's lives, but hey, so it goes. Bo Burnham's feature debut as director is a forensically well-observed and excruciatingly difficult-to-watch comedy-drama about a teenage girl struggling to cope with the demands of modern life.

Very, very impressive performance from Elsie Fisher, who's in virtually every scene, and a witty and thoughtful script (Burnham again). May be of interest to future anthropologists in its detailing of the way that social media exacerbate generation gaps and generally prevent people from communicating with each other; one of several ironies the film points out. Manages to be bleak to the point of depressing for most of its duration but still turns it around for a credibly warm and quite moving conclusion. Very relatable no matter what year you were born in.

Low-octane comedy-drama from Iran, as a film director and an actress (both playing themselves) set off to learn the fate of a teenage girl who has sent them a series of troubling messages. And... they drive around a lot, meet various locals, hear a lot of stories not strictly relevant to their investigation, and so on.

I went to see this with a friend of Iranian extraction and at the end I asked him if there was some kind of subtle cultural subtext going on I wasn't picking up on. And he said no, this is just a film with not much going on in it. The pace is ambling, at best, the tone curiously laid-back (the closest thing to a plot twist comes when a prize stud bull hurts its leg); there may be something going on about cultural and generational divides within Iran, but if so it's very obliquely presented. Not unpleasant to watch, but the entertainment value is ambient.

Superior Netflix high-school comedy-drama. A teenage girl is provoked into starting a feminist club at her high school and resist the double-standards she sees everywhere. (There are jokes, too.)

Sounds like another crashingly didactic piece of post-Weinstein agitprop, but director Amy Poehler is smart enough to mix a little more grit and nuance into the formula. There are still things about the movie which grate slightly - the female principal of the school is almost comically indifferent, there's a rather-too-glib piece of plotting about a rape, and the demonisation of white men is surely problematic - but this is subtle and funny and occasionally sweet and tender, and you do care about the characters and their situations. The film is insightful enough to imply that even if an injustice is brazen and obvious, it doesn't necessarily follow that the solution to it is straightforward. This is an openly feminist film with an axe to grind, but still an accessible piece of entertainment.
