A bit of violence and carnage!
Once again we are treated to a great horror novel from Iain Rob Wright which isn't just full of blood and gore; it's a good story too.

This is a cross between the "escape" genre and "team building" with a bit of "Saw" thrown in for good measure. A group of work colleagues meet in the middle of nowhere to spend the day relaxing and having fun ... little do they know what's in store for them when they enter an underground set of shipping containers. The "game" revolves around the ugly secrets of those taking part with Cheryl unfortunately being in the wrong place at the wrong time. What follows is a fast paced delve into the past of the lives of Cheryl's colleagues but what are they going to have to do to escape with their lives? It's not pretty but neither are those taking part.

A well written, fast paced, intriguing story full of action and, yes, blood and although I could see the main twist coming from a mile away, it was still an enjoyable and good quick read. Recommended to those of us who don't mind a bit of violence and carnage.

My thanks to Mr Wright as I did receive an advance copy from him prior to publication in return for an honest review however, I bought a Kindle copy too as I didn't get round to reading it in time and I'm good like that ?

Sequel to the late 90s/early noughties (edit: the year 2000, to be precise) family-friendly Aardman Animations flick, which itself was a riff on The Great Escape and starred a then-still-in-vogue Mel Gibson as the voice of Rocky the Rooster.

Here, Gibson is replaced by Zachary Levi, with the film set a good few years (decades?) on from the original, and with Rocky and Ginger now having a kid of their own and living - alongside the other escapees - on a remote island. Until such time as their kid goes exploring the mainland and has a run-in with a face from their past ...

Inoffensive stuff, by and large - although parts (specifically the 'Stepford Wives' collaring/mind control bits - might be a bit too strong for the younger ones in the audience!

Good Dirt is the story of a family tragedy and how it shapes the lives of the remaining family. The timeline is a bit all over the place: Ebby’s flight to France after her fiancé doesn’t turn up to their lavish wedding in the present, the house intrusion in the present past, Ebby’s family history in the distant past (Africa, slavery and escape). Now, I’m a fan of multiple timelines, but these were a bit too disjointed, and it did require a bit of concentration (especially on a dog walk). This may well be a different experience if you read the book, but I struggled a bit, and had to keep checking chapter headings and rewinding now and again. Perhaps this was just the wrong time to listen to it. I did like the story, though.
