My Thoughts: This is a very unique mystery that will captivate readers from the beginning. A fictional novel based on true facts, this story gives the reader an insight to the horrific things that happened at the turn of the century.
This story will certainly keep the readers' attention. The author has created very believable characters. The readers will either like them or hate them.
This is a wonderful story for those who like a good mystery. This one has many twists in the plot to keep the readers on their toes.

1587, and Mary, Queen of Scots, dies by the executioner's axe, her head, shorn of its auburn wig, rolling across the platform. Will her death end the ceaseless plotting against Mary's red-haired cousin, Elizabeth?1588, the year of the Spanish Armada, is a time of more terror and triumph, not just for queen and court but for the whole of England. The turmoil is reflected in its theatres and under the galleries of inns like London's The Queen's Head where Lord Westfield's Men perform. The scene there on grows even more tumultuous when one of the actors is murdered by a mysterious stranger during a brawl.Nicholas Bracewell, the company's bookholder, a role far wider than mere producer, faces two immediate repercussions. The first is to secure a replacement acceptable to its temperamental star -- and chief shareholder -- Lawrence Firethorn. The second is to keep his promise to the dying Will Fowler and catch his killer.Soon further robberies, accidents, and misfortunes strike Lord Westfield's Men even as their stage successes swell. Bracewell begins to suspect a conspiracy, not a single murderous act, but where lies the proof? Then the players are rewarded with the ultimate accolade -- an appearance at court -- and the canny bookholder senses the end to the drama is at hand....
It was good not something I’d come back to reading again but good enough to take me to book 2. I love this era and found the descriptions one of the best parts of the book. I did have it sussed from just after the murder though.

There is a war coming.
And it will change everything.
For Sienna Faremin, staying alive has been merely a byproduct of the torture she received for over a decade.
Running one mission after another for the Magick council, she is nothing more than their personal assassin, leaving her hands bloodier than most.
When she's tasked with killing a man believed to be the last surviving member of a Guardian family, Sienna accepts, only to discover the man she's supposed to kill, is none other than Daxon Ward, one of only two survivors she saved the night the Guardian academy burned to the ground.
As she dives deeper into the truth behind the attack, Sienna discovers a web of lies and deceit carefully woven into place in order to cover a deadly plot that would change the realm...forever.
I’ve grown to really enjoy Jessica Wayne and she didn’t disappoint with this book. I read the prequel The Last Ward and knew it showed promise so I was really looking forward to seeing where she took the fist book and I really enjoyed it! Her character me are solid and this had a kind of Throne of Glass by Sarah j Maas feel to it! Definitely a series worth sticking with if you like a fast paced adventure!
