So, I've now seen this movie twice, once in 3D and once in 2D. Honestly, it doesn't need to be seen in 3D.
I know the critics panned this film, but I found it incredibly likeable. Tom Hardy made this film, he was Venom and Eddie Brock. The accent was whack, but that's his thing. The story was a standard origin story, and mostly predictable, it doesn't re-invent the wheel or anything.
I'm not sure how/why Michelle Williams was cast in the girlfriend role, but I found her completely annoying. But, I'm not a fan of Michelle Williams at all.

Honestly for me I enjoyed this movie. It was entertaining. Tom Hardy did well with both characters. Setting up the story was fairly explained. The rating for PG-13 hit the movie’s to its peak needed to changed to rated R should of be made. No problem with that rating. The villain was rushed. They witch-hunt the useless symbiote and made great for the 45 minutes and they killed with its caretaker so it can stay alive. The end cliffhanger of to Carnage was perfectly setup fine.

After the disappointing treatment of the character in the overstuffed Spider-Man 3,I was intrigued by the prospect of a solo outing for the anti-hero, this time as portrayed by Tom Hardy.
While he is still playing Eddie Brock/Venom, this pretty much straight up ignores that earlier film (probably for the best), with Tom Hardy completely chewing the scenery throughout.
While Stan Lee also makes a cameo, I'm not sure that this is set in the same 'universe' as the other Marvel movies, with no mention made of any of the Avengers or of any of the events from their solo outings.

Even the delectable and normally highly watchable Tom Hardy cannot salvage this film. It beggars belief that both he and Olivia Colman signed up for this drivel. The whole film is Tom Hardy driving his car and making and receiving a series of phone calls whilst doing so. That is it. To his wife, his kids, the female he had a one night stand with who is currently in labour with his baby, his workmate and his boss. I persevered to the end expecting Hardy to be involved in a crash and die which would have livened up the film a teensy bit but no, he has these conversations and then the film finishes with no climax whatsoever. Dull and boring from start to finish.
