Leanne Crabtree (480 KP) rated Dead Until Dark (Sookie Stackhouse, #1) in Books

DNF @ page 80/326.
I've been reading this 10 days and only gotten 80 pages in, which just shows how much i wasn't enjoying this considering i finish most paperbacks in about 5 days. I only wanted to read this because of True Blood--I've only seen the first series of the show, and wasn't too impressed with that either--and sometimes i think the books are better than the shows/films but this book was so slow moving and the way it was written--so southern--was starting to grate on me. Sookie was annoying me and Bill seemed like the kind of vampire to run off from, not rescue and take on a date.
Not for me at all.

3.5 stars.
I liked this, mainly the sizzling attraction between Jolie and Rand. And don't forget Jolie and the werewolf who's name I've forgotten. Or Jolie and Sinjin, the vampire. Everybody wants her.
But I was all for Rand, though his reluctance to sleep with her annoyed me throughout the book. Though after his description of the joining of them, I'm not too surprised that he's resisted so far.
I'm a little disappointed with the ending, I guess I was expecting for the war with Belle to actually end ready for another story in the second but I can see it's likely to stretch across all the books in the series.
I will certainly be reading more of the series I just don't know when.

Awix (3310 KP) rated Vampire Circus (1972) in Movies

Visually striking if rather unsubtle and slightly incoherent Hammer horror movie. The usual sort of thing: humble townsfolk have enough of the local vampire and do him in, only to face a dreadful revenge years later. This time the instrument of vengeance is a circus full of (you'll never guess!) vampires.
Pretty much as extravagant as Hammer ever got, in terms of gore and nudity; the impact of the film is helped by lurid production design and cinematography. That said, the story's nothing special and most of the acting from the leads is very drab. (Extraordinary supporting cast full of culty names who don't get much to do.) The odd decent moment and sequence, not far off the average standard of early seventies Hammer. Vacuous but watchable.

I have mixed feelings about this film. For one, it is a great move forward towards realistic sci-fi, and I hope more movies are made like this.
The biggest problems for me were, a) the voiceover, it reminded me too much of Interview with a Vampire, and b) Brad Pitt being the lead. I could think of other actors that could have executed the character a little better.
Like others, I felt like the ending was completely anticlimactic. The story was so strong throughout, then I feel like it was spoiled. The film was also a little too long. That being said, the VFX were pretty amazing, and I can only imagine what this film would look like in IMAX.
