I think Watchmen is a marvelous graphic novel about the idolization of heroes in society. We praise heroes, but what happens when they are not necessarily the good guys? Are you wrong for rooting for justice, rather than goodness?

I’m terrible at watching TV, and there are also loads of films I really need to watch. I’m hoping that writing a list will motivate me!!

A good backstory
Although not officially Moore-approved, this six-issue collection gives a glimpse of the glitz and glamour of the original group of superheroes, before Watchmen. We get a short introduction to the members of the crew (most of which have their own volumes in the "Before Watchmen" series), and how they came about and interacted. Some amusing fails from their early attempts to foil justice (remember these aren't superheroes, these are guys who donned a costume and went looking for trouble), leading up to a case involving the kidnapping and murder of children.
I'm not a huge fan of the artwork here, being quite cartoony, but it seems to fit the era OK.

Superheroes, time travel, doughnuts and talking chimps
Contains spoilers, click to show
Another day another superhero tv show - right?? Well this one is really something special. Was hooked from episode 1. The best way I can describe it is a not as dark watchmen tv series. Bunch of kids with powers adopted by man who turns them into a superhero team. Years later they reunite when their 'father' dies. Then happens time travel, drugs, assassins, talking chimps, bird watching, robots, JFK conspiracies, the apocalypse and doughnuts! Like watchmen this has an amazing soundtrack which adds to the quality of the show. This would get 10 out of 10 but I just find Ellen Page terrible and every scene with her just made me cringe so (SPOILER) when she turns out to be the villain (sort of) I was quite pleased!! Watch this show!!!

Like a more realistic Scooby Doo story
This part of the non-Moore-approved pre-Watchmen story revolves around Laurie Jupiter, daughter of the original Silk Spectre. In a burst of teen angst she pushes against her mum's vigilante training regime (and the news of some of the saucier aspects of her past) and runs away from home with her new boyfriend.
She meets a camper van full of hippies and heads off to San Francisco with them. She soon uncovers a nefarious plot to poison the LCD supply in the city (zoinks!) and sets out to uncover them.
There is a certain Scooby Doo feel about this book, and while it is entertaining enough, and the artwork is enjoyable, it doesn't really seem to add much to the pre-Watchmen series as a whole. One exception is the Nite Owl and the Comedian's brief involvement in Laurie's decision to head home to Mom, their two different approaches showing their personalities.

Brief story of Dollar Bill
Dollar Bill, one of the original Minutemen, is not one of those characters covered in detail in Watchmen (I can't even remember if he is mentioned at all). As outlined in the Minutemen series, Dollar Bill was originally a bank mascot, with the financial corporation looking to cash in on the superhero fad. The corporate ambitions soon go too far and Dollar Bill goes from being an advertising figurehead to part of the Minutemen, albeit one who lurks in the background and only comes out for the photoshoot. Over time, the man behind the mask starts to grow into the role and wants to fight crime for real. Sadly he hadn't watched the Incredibles and was undone by his ludicrous cape (which he was against from the start).
A decent single issue, and while it doesn't add much to the Watchmen canon, it gives more story to the character (who I think may have been included as something of a dig at Captain America).
