really rather enjoyed this
Independent reviewer for Divine Magazine, I was gifted my copy of this book.
Cain is hired by Ms Astor to find her husband, along with a Rodin statuette. But things don't add up to Cain, and he visits the club she works at to talk to her some more. Lily Lavender is on stage, and she pushes all kinds of buttons that Cain never knew he needed pushing. Riley, the man behind Lily, has a similar reaction to Cain. But Riley is keeping secrets, secrets that have gotten two people killed and Cain needs to know, if they are to get out of this alive.
I really rather enjoyed this!
It's got instant and powerful attraction, it's got steam and passion, it's got a nutty woman, it's got so many levels of secrets! It's deadly too.
Told from both Cain and Riley's point of view, in the third, so we get each and every reaction from both men. Reactions to each other, to the situation around them, to Riley's cross dressing and to Cain very unexpected reaction to that.
Loved Cain's reaction to Riley's cross dressing. It's clear Riley has been treated badly in the past because of that, but Cain is like, AND??? It's part of who Riley is, and Cain just takes it as it is, as Riley is. Cain does, admittedly, rather like Riley in his ladies knickers and stockings, so that helped!
There is a rather long winded conversation between Riley and Cain about pulp fiction and noir films (I think!) bit I got lost with that, mostly because I have no clue what they were talking about, so I glanced over that bit!
I did like the twist as to what was really in the statuettes, and where that led the plot, and just what Ms Astor had, rather that what she THOUGHT she had.
Not quite a one sitting read, but I did stay til after midnight to finish it, when I had a 6am get up!
I've read one other by Ms Laine, I'd like to read some more. She has a way of grabbing you and pulling you in.
4 solid stars

So insightful, so insane
This thing dives deep into bananas, and then keeps swimming downwards, until it finds a trench of crazy to swim right into and explore exhaustively.
A list of my favorite things:
-The urgency with which he is trying to solve a hundreds year old murder
-The floating head depositions
-"31 mysteries PLUS ONE"
-"...and a dog"
-"It might not be what you oughtn't to think it is not." And other such sentences.
-The fact that he sprinkles in actual, good points- and then promptly goes back to being bonkers
-"Only the dead..."
-"...saying that he is, in fact...satan's shorty?"
-"a midget transexual prostitute"
-The frantic graphics
Among other gems. So good at being both informative and just... I don't even know.
So many drinking games to be had.
Always watch with someone else, the "did that just happen? did he just really say that?" will be distracting otherwise.
Highly recommend, but it is really hard to find.

Bostonian916 (449 KP) rated Everybody's All-American (1988) in Movies
Aug 5, 2020
Everybody's All American follows a 25 year span in life of a college star football player who goes on to the NFL. The movie starts off in the senior year at LSU for Gavin "Ghost" Grey and follows him through many life events culminating in a 25 year celebration of that teams championship run.
The message as indicated by synopsis and trailer is that the love of the two main characters conquers all and guides their decision making throughout their lives. That isn't the case at all. At times there is some decision making that is decidedly outside of their relationship altogether, when it comes to business and other things.
The cast was good. Dennis Quaid is always a charmer. Jessica Lange did a good job, as well. John Goodman was exceptional is his role, though his role wasn't a needed addition to the film in my opinion. What was achieved by his characters presence could have been done much more effectively. Timothy Sutton did not disappoint, though I personally forbid him from ever wearing a mustache again.
Anywho. Weird little film. Not as sports related as it would lead you to believe.

Loved finding out about Lochlan!
Independent reviewer for Archaeolibrarain, I was gifted my copy of this book.
This is book 2.5 in the Bloodline Chronicles, but you don't need to have read the main books to follow this one. It might help, but I don't think it's necessary. It's been some time (only 6 months, but seems a lot longer!) since I read the third book, and I've been to sleep since then, that so much is buried deep in my book brian, but I followed this just fine.
Lochlan does pop up in at least one other book, but I don't recall which and for how much.
He is the only human in the Vampire Knights of New Ulster, the only ever to be allowed to join. He has to prove himself along those much faster, stronger and deadly than he, but he does have his gift, fire.
I loved finding out how Lochlan came to be with the Knights. Like I said, ge pops up along the way, and Ms Silver decided he needed more of a story than he gets in the main books and I loved that he does.
Marcelle pops up, and does all sorts of delicious things to Lochlan, but there isn't any romance here, not really. Marcelle is DEVOTED to Sarai and Setanta, as a throuple, they adore each other but they have a very open relationship, with no issues with outside partners. She doesn't see what she has with Lochlan as anything other than smex. But she does try to add a *bit* of romance, dating and such. And Lochlan knows this and it really was refreshing that there was no pining on Lochlan's part for Marcelle. Oh don't get me wrong, he wants Marcelle, but the deep romance aspect isn't here.
It is violent, but dealing with flesh eating undead vampires thought to have been eradicated was never gonna be fun. And Lochlan suffers, badly at said vampire's hands. Come-uppence is got, though!
What I loved most, though, was what I didn't see coming. Now, I'm not gonna say what that is, because I really did not see it, until something was said and I was "say WHAT??" and I had to go back and reread what was said to make sure I understood. More is said about this along the way and Lochlan's feeling are deep, understandably so. You'll understand why I'm being vague when you get to that "say WHAT??" part!
Bear, Gedeon and Crispin are Lochlan's teammates. They are an interesting bunch and now I want them all to get a short story somewhere!
I gave book one and two 4 stars. Book 3 was initially 4 stars but talked itself into 5 stars and guess what??
This one did too!
5 full and very surprising stars

Arnold is great in it (2 more)
Sharon Stone looks great
Great are they or aren’t they plot
One of Arnie’s best
By 1990 Schwarzenegger was in full stride and could do no wrong. He even tried his hand in comedy (Twins) with Danny De Vito and won audiences. Futuristic sci fi is where Schwarzenegger’s real strength is (The Running Man, Terminator Franchise, Eraser, Predator..) and the perfect example of this (other than Terminator 2) is Total Recall. It has everything from very quotable lines to an intriguing story which raises the bar on previous Schwarzenegger entries (originally a Philip K Dick story). The basic story line is a construction worker call Doug Quaid dreams of going to Mars but when he finally gets the chance things might not all be what they seem. Is he a secret agent? Is he on Mars? Did he get a divorce? And will those people get air? Sure it looks dated now but this was considered one of the most expensive movies made at the time and the dated graphics can be sidelined for seeing what happens to Schwarzenegger’s Quaid. If you buy the special edition dvd, you’re in for a treat also as Schwarzenegger provides his take on what a commentary is. Check it out.

Heritage Festival Brings Murder
Kelly is taking an afternoon to see the boat that her friends, Ivan and Rudy, own. But the tour never happens when she finds a dagger covered in what looks like blood on the boat. While neither of the brothers own it, they do recognize it from their past. A few days later, the owner of a Russian merchandise store turns up dead on their boat as well. What is going on? Does it have to do with the Russian Heritage Festival taking place in town?
I love it when background characters get a chance to shine, which is what happens here. I was intrigued from the beginning and couldn’t wait to see how it would all play out. Unfortunately, I did feel the climax was abrupt, and therefore weaker than it could have been. While the suspects are appropriately shady, the rest of the cast is charming, which is no surprise to fans of the series. I really do love these characters. As always, I enjoyed spending time in a fictional version of the area where I grew up. If you are looking for a fun cozy series, be sure to check this one out.
