Movie makes fun of itself and the studios
Holding on for a hero
I never tire of watching this movie, Reynolds has over the years proved to be quite versatile, playing serious roles and crossing various genres but Deadpool has to be his standout role, where he is hilarious, I love all the little digs he makes about the films low budget and the xmen movies, and the subtle digs at his off screen friend Hugh Jackman's Wolverine character, some may say that the violence is a bit over the top but the comedy side more than makes up for it, just wish Marvel would transition the Merc with a mouth into the more mainstream movies, could just imagine the interaction between Deadpool and Iron Man as Wilson would undoubtedly drive Stark nuts

I'm writing this in early 2021.

I don't think I'd seen this film since the early noughties.

If you asked me what I remember of it, I probably would have said

Slow motion. Lot and lots of slow motion.

And that is actually pretty accurate: directed by John Woo, this has an overabundance of Slo-Mo shots and has Tom Cruise and Ving Rhames both reprising their role from the first film.

It's also slightly uncomfortable watching this now (with the world still in the grip of a global pandemic), as the driver for the plot is - guess what - a deadly virus getting loose.

(oh, and in one of cinemas great 'what if' : I believe that Dougray Scott had to turn down the role of Wolverine as he was busy filming this)

Dramatisation/Inspired by the life of PT Barnum and starring none-other than Wolverine himself - Hugh Jackman - in his first role (I think) since saying goodbye to that character in "Logan", this was actually somewhat of a surprise hit - and a surprise to me, too, that Hugh Jackman could sing and dance!

It seems like most of the songs from this show - "The Greatest Show", "This Is Me", "A Million Dreams", "Never Enough", to name but a few - where in the charts forever and a day: indeed, such was the all-encompassing pervasiveness of them that many artists created their own versions (some are better; others worse).

Yes, it glosses over some of the less-savoury aspects of his character and business model (animal cruelty, paying his staff little to nothing), but this is a genuine feel-good movie for the masses!

The question we must ask ourselves here is: does adding graphic gory violence and F-bombs by the cartload really transform a reasonably formulaic X-men franchise movie into something qualitatively different? Because it seems to me that if you were to make a PG-rated edit of Logan it would not feel that much different from many of the other films in the series. Well, perhaps I exaggerate just a bit, because the film does have a downbeat mood quite unusual for this genre, and the focus on the fragility of its characters does give the actors a lot to work with (though Hugh Jackman is, quite predictably, acted off the screen by Patrick Stewart).

Plot as follows: the year is 2030, or thereabouts, and all is not well for mutantkind, inasmuch as they seem to have died out. A knocking-on-a-bit Wolverine is working as a limo driver and trying to keep a low profile while caring for a frail Charles Xavier, but the appearance of a young mutant girl forces the duo to reassess their priorities.

Maybe the problem is that the first trailer for this film - the one with the Johnny Cash soundtrack - promised something genuinely powerful and melancholic. The song isn't in the movie and neither, really, is the power and melancholy. The movie seems to be trying to tell the story of a conflicted man steeped in violence who tries to find redemption at the end of his life, but Jackman's Wolverine has always been so much of a teddy bear - his 'darkness' and 'edginess' have always felt like corporate branding - that this doesn't really work.

Still, the film is well-assembled and its vision of a dystopian near-future America is both engaging and consisting. The film's willingness to simply not worry about franchise continuity is also kind of refreshing. With the future of the X-franchise apparently somewhat up in the air, this is at the very least a superior entry to mark the departure of at least one of its mainstays.

Ryan Reynolds was made for this role!
Ryan Reynolds was born to play this character, his sense and style of humour fits this film. You can see why he fought so hard for this to be made, and I am absolutely sure that nobody else could really do the character justice. After the poor attempt at bringing Deadpool to the big screen seen in Wolverine: Origins, this is refreshing and far truer to its source material. The constant breaking of the forth wall (for which Deadpool is so famous) serves to keep the audience intimately involved and literally invites them along for the ridiculous ride. The action is impressively done, and that there is a real sense that the film embodies Deadpool's lunacy. I am struggling to pinpoint any issues, as it was just too much fun. This film was exactly what it should have been and I couldn't have asked for anything more...
