"The first time I watched this film, I was 13 years old, and I had no idea what kind of ‘war film’ to expect. My first reaction was that it was too slow; but as I got home that night, the poetry of the narrative, the visuals and the music began to sink in. I ended up dragging my friends to see it, watching the film five times in theaters; and though the film received mixed reactions at the time, I found Terrence Malick’s work to be a transformative meditation on the classic Transcendental themes of the brotherhood of man, self-sacrifice, and faith. It is only a ‘war film’ insofar as the war is a metaphor for the Darwinian struggle of survival in what seems an unjust world."

World-War one set drama, which I've only recently discovered was based on a children's book and on a stage show - I actually thought the stage show came later!

Anyway, this follows the trials and tribulations of the horse Joey from his birth, through his time on a farm (the work for which he is totally unsuited) and into the horrors of the First World War, with some stunning cinematography and a whole bevy of acting talent on display (including not one but two future MCU stalwarts)

The subject this month that was picked for my book club was world war one, I was struggling to find a book to read, and so was lent two books. This one by my mother and war horse by my friend. I chose to read this one, and was honestly a bit dubious about reading it. I have always been more interested in ancient history than modern history and didn't think it would agree with me. However I couldn't put this book down, the way it is written makes you feel like you are sat with Harry, listening to him tell his stories, and for me it us unusual to read about someone that didn't want to go to war. Also reading about his life, and the things he did before the war and after it....well what and interesting man and definitely full of character. I hope his story lives on for a long time to come.

"I love the whole BRD trilogy for Fassbinder’s truthful rendering of the German psyche after World War II devastation and post–Marshall Plan de-Nazification, and for the great parts that he offered to his female actors. Being a teenager in the fifties, in Germany, I left for Paris to avoid being sucked into the materialistic obsession displayed here."

Wasn't what I expected
It was a very interesting take on the world war two era, very politically based but an interesting insight on how the UK handled those troubling times. I enjoyed it profusely, it was almost a documentary film if it hasn't already been categorised as one. Definitely worth the watch!
