"Mary Miller is one of my favorite short story writers and in “Big World,” she writes about flawed, boozy women who make bad decisions and live to tell their tales. The writing in this little collection is atmospheric and claustrophobic and illuminating and lovely. In each story, Miller shows us how the world is as big as it is small."

"I’m currently working through this one story at a time A friend who works in publishing introduced me to Monterroso’s writing because I have often called some of my work fables, and Monterroso’s short stories feel like that, also. But they are also very unsettling, with a Kafak-esque sheen to them, like black little pearls that are beautiful but scare you."

I'm just not the biggest fan of this series I guess the writing is good and the world is great but the characters I just can't stand them and don't really care what happens to them at all. Also the plot isn't that great either everything is pretty obvious and not that exciting when you finally get to the end.

This is one of the most artistic and original pieces of writing I've read in a very long time. The characters are drawn with both gentle and swift strokes, revealing far more about them in a few words than other authors do in whole volumes. "She’s the children’s writer with whom I most identify. She said, ‘By some lucky chance, I remember exactly how I felt and thought at 11.’ That struck a chord with me. The Story of the Treasure Seekers was a breakthrough children’s book. Oswald is such a very real narrator, at a time when most people were writing morality plays for children."

I read the Secret Circle novels after they announced the television series.
These books are alright, LJ's writing is so intensely readable, I still love it, after all these years.
The reason I think these two books are just ok was because I wasn't really a fan of the main character. If you like LJ Smith, this series is definitely readable.
