"In 1941, the year of Citizen Kane, a far greater first film coauthored by its director appeared: The Maltese Falcon. From this great beginning, John Huston went on to forge a consistent and unmistakable identity toward life and film that he maintained throughout his long, varied, and productive career. After Laurence Olivier, Albert Finney has been the greatest English actor to work in films, and Under the Volcano is his greatest role. Like all the great characters in Huston’s best films who are ironic, never sentimental, humorous, and usually very unpleasant, Albert Finney, never offscreen, is playing someone totally inebriated from beginning to end. It reminds me of another favorite, Richard III, where another great actor, in this case playing a serial murderer, pulls out all the stops, brings it all off, and brings the viewer over to his side."

Around ten minutes into this movie, I found myself thinking, surely, they could have hired someone other than Tom Cruise for this character. The main character should been played by an actor who does the 'lovable douche' character well, i.e. Chris Pratt, Bradley Cooper, Ryan Reynolds, etc. It was fairly boring, they could have done so many things with this movie, but it was just meh.

Fresh take on a classic
When I heard this was being made and saw the trailer, I thought, no thanks that looks rubbish. However, I watched it and I loved it. Charlie Hunnams acting was strong and powerful. Although I found Jude Laws character very weak. I actually found myself liking the urban take on this medieval classic.

Fantastic rags to riches story made all the more amazing because it was written by and starred Stallone who at that time was a small time actor.
A rousing soundtrack and star power raises this one above others of its genre and made Stallone a Star to be reckoned with, its showing its age but still doesn't fail to leave you with a warm feeling inside.
