I honestly can't think of a single thing I don't like about Pan's Labyrinth. From start to finish, it's arguably one of the most captivating pieces of cinema ever put to screen.
Guillermo del Toro once again proves his visionary status, with some superbly well realised creature designs. The dark fantasy element of Pan's Labyrinth is vividly otherworldly, and visually unique. Doug Jones portrays both Fauno and The Pale Man, two creatures that immediately earned a place in iconic movie monsters standing. The Pale Man in particular is utterly terrifying.
Ofelia is the young girl who embarks on this fantasy adventure, and actor Ivana Baquero is a delightful presence throughout the movie.
Of course, a bigger chunk of the runtime is taken up by what's happening in the real world. Set in Spain, in the early years of the Francoist period, it's a gritty narrative that touches upon war and dictatorship.
The dictator in this case is Captain Vidal, Ofelia's new stepfather and soon to be biological father of her unborn brother. His contempt towards Ofelia is unpleasant, and he has little regard for anyone's life but his own and his unborn son (nothing like a case of family lineage and mantle carrying to get the misogynistic juices flowing eh?).
He's played with despicabe glee by Sergi López, an actor who I believe was more known in Spain for his comedic work prior to this, so hats off to him. Vidal is one of the most easy-to-hate characters I've ever seen!
The collision of these two opposing world's and cinema styles is fantastic, and is paced perfectly, the fantasy sequences being a brilliant burst of magic, within a compelling and tense war story, all complimented by a beautiful music score.
Pan's Labyrinth is full of wonder and emotion, both fantastical and harrowing. It's a straight up masterpiece that easily makes my top 20 films of all time, maybe even top 10!

This is a film that I heard about a few years ago and never really got around to seeing what it was about despite being a fan of Sean Bean’s work over the years.
The concept and premise of this film is actually a clever one that if in the right hands could have been so much more impactful and thrilling, but the way they present things here just doesn’t work well at all.
Bean himself has always been a very solid actor but his performance here is quite mediocre and any attempt by him to make his character or the situation he finds himself in to be realistic fails to deliver.
The movie has much too many plot holes within the story which detract so much from being able to enjoy what they give us.
This is especially true when the story goes off on pointless tangents that don’t add to the story at hand at all.
Loved seeing Mary McCormack and Joel David Moore in supporting roles, yet neither is utilized nearly enough here and they both come across as being caricatures which is quite a shame.
For a thriller, this film is lacking heavily on the thrilling or suspenseful moments that would make it fit even better into the genre…

The story is filled with way too many plot holes that detract from the enjoyment of this idea because it goes off on numerous tangents that aren’t really connected to anything worthwhile. Loved seeing Moore and McCormick in supporting roles, but neither of their characters are developed beyond a superficial level which is a shame. Isn’t nearly as thrilling as a film in the thriller genre should be.

Sweet, but too similar to previous movies of this nature
As someone from a similar background as the lead actor, these films have become all too familiar. Culture clashes, torn between a family and a western lifestyle has been seen in films such as Bride and Prejudice, Bend it Like Beckham, and even East is East. So it doesn't seem particularly novel to me.
What I liked was the serious side of it - no over the top music sequences, just an honest portrayal of Kumail Nanjiani's intense courtship and subsequent challenges while meeting his real wife Emily Gordon. The truth is that much of this image has changed, so it can become tedious when the same generic story is peddled to the masses. I'm hoping that we can move away from these types of plots in the future. Overall, just an average film, but great acting from Holly Hunter and Anupam Kher as per usual.

WOW... Okay, Tom's life is very... unfortunate. And while I was interested, I realized I wanted more of the stories of his career and less about how he came to be. The first half of the book is his struggles with God in a religious upbringing, the third quarter is his struggles in military service. And while these stories are simultaneously heartbreaking and emotional, they are such a drag to read. It's not that he doesn't tell the story well, he does, injecting his trademark humor onto just about every page. But the tragic nature of the events counters that humor making it more gallows and inappropriate than anything. I SLOGGED through the first half. It does pick up some once he becomes an actor (and like The Doctor, Tom is a bit of a name dropper). Insightful and interesting, but I'm still not sure I have any idea who on Earth is Tom Baker...

Blown away!!!! Save Underground from Cancellation!
Holy crap! There I was, innocently minding my own business on Hulu. Saw the actor from Leverage (older than series) pop up on the screen, have always loved him, figured hey let's give it a go. I had never even heard of this series. I can not believe more people aren't talking about this freaking series man!!! It's a portrayal from the eyes of the slaves during slavery. Very much like Roots, but in my opinion, just as life altering, without ever truly repeating the story. The actors and actresses are just breathtaking. The costumes and soundtrack are mesmerizing. The cast literally just gets better from one season to the next. So incredibly impressed with this show. We need this show, its a shame WGN cancelled it. I really hope Hulu picks it up.

Five Feet Apart is the story of Stella, a high school sophomore who has cystic fibrosis. We first meet her when Stella admits herself to Saint Grace Hospital for one of her "tune-ups" while her two best friends are going on a nice tropical vacation. Also in the CF ward is Poe, her homosexual best friend, and Will, a 17 going on 18 year old sort of rebel. Female-centric "Rebel Without a Cause" crossed with "The Fault in Our Stars" as the two fall hard for each other unable to get closer than 6 feet next to each other. If they get much closer, they could catch the other's bacterial infection and die slowly and painfully. This lighthearted romance (natch) breaks your heart while instilling the importance of human touch. Directed with limited skill by the actor who plays Rafael on Jane the Virgin, Five Feet Apart is a nice distraction, but not highly recommended if you want high quality.
