David McK (3540 KP) rated A Quiet Place (2018) in Movies
Aug 23, 2020 (Updated Jan 10, 2023)
I'd heard good stuff about this film.
They lied.
Slow, plodding, and lacking any sense of peril or tension, this is set in a post-apocalyptic world where seemingly invulnerable blind monsters (which we're never told where they come from) hunt by sound, and sound alone - which explains why there's not even any bird song. This then follows a tight-knit family trying to survive in this new reality, complete with a deaf kid and a mother about to give birth.
Yes, all the cliches are here: creaking floorboards, jagged nails sticking up from the wood, a kid who blames herself for the loss of her younger sibling early on in the film ...
About the only good thing I can say is that this is short, with a running time of just over 1.5 hours.

David McK (3540 KP) rated Elevation (2024) in Movies
Mar 9, 2025 (Updated Mar 9, 2025)
2024 post-apocalyptic action movie, that comes across as a hybrid of Aliens and (maybe) "A Quiet Place", and that stars Anthony Mackie in a post-Falcon, pre-Captain America (movie) role alongside Morena Baccarin and set in a not-too-distant future where creatures have emerged from underground, have more or less wiped out mankind yet will not - for some unknown reason - ever travel above a certain elevation.
With his son sick and running out of life-saving medicine, Mackie's character Will resolves to travel 'below the line' to the nearest hospital, alongside his now-deceased wife's best friend and the woman whom he blames for said wife's death, in an attempt to procure more medicine and return back home with the same.
Film has a mid-credit scene, that sets up where the sequel (if it comes!) will go!

Suswatibasu (1703 KP) rated The Book of the Unnamed Midwife in Books
Oct 24, 2017 (Updated Oct 24, 2017)
A dark dystopian tale about prejudice
This is a pretty excellent dystopian novel, almost like an amalgamation of The Road and The Handmaid's Tale, exploring women's role in an apocalyptic setting.
After a fever kills most of the Earth's population, specifically women and children, making childbirth deadly, a midwife attempts to survive an extremely precarious situation for her gender. In the new world, women are routinely raped and sold, used as baby making machines and commodified as a bartering tool.
Her only option is to disguise herself as a man and attempt to make her way across the country in search for a beacon of hope. She faces age-old prejudices, such as religion and patriarchy, while trying to be a guide to humanity.
No doubt, it is extremely dark, and some of it is very disturbing, so brace yourself for feeling a little queasy.

Billie Wichkan (118 KP) rated The Curse: A Post-Apocalyptic Thriller in Books

Who Can Defy The Curse? It's been thirty years since the End War destroyed civilization as we know it.
Now a terrible curse hangs over the survivors, one that's pushing them towards a slow and painful extinction.
Unless...
A group of women, known as 'The Complex', have banded together to rebuild and survive in the heart of New York.
Despite the odds, these women aren't going down without a fight. Organized and resourceful, they've set out to rebuild the human race no matter what the cost.
But can it be done?
Can anyone defy the curse?
This was quite a surprise story. This was a story of post apocalyptic New York. We have some great characters and the description of life afterwards was very believable.
This is a great plot and different take on this subject. Lots of twists and surprises here and looking forward to reading more,
