"This goes up to the Chicago stuff. When all the Mississippi guys made it up to Chicagoland, the Chess Brothers started picking them up and made it possible for them to record some stunning material. “There’s so much good stuff here that I don’t even know where to begin. Louisiana Blues, Rollin’ And Tumblin’, Long Distance Call, I Can’t Be Satisfied – all of these recordings were turning points in that, once electricity entered the picture, bands with three and four people in them could do battle with Duke Ellington and Count Basie and 10-piece horn sections. “Muddy Waters had a very distinctive guitar tone. When he played a Gibson Les Paul goldtop, you could really identify the sound, and you knew who it was. Compared to BB or Freddy or Albert, his playing might not have been so fanciful, but his licks were stinging and ferocious. And he laid down a lot of Delta-based slide guitar, too. Just because he was in Chicago, he didn’t leave his humble beginnings behind."

"To me this record sounds like electricity. It's sorta arty-punk. Tom Verlaine sounds on the verge of a nervous breakdown and his singing and lyrics are so dreamy and elliptical. It's brutally stark and spare. The guitar playing is so amazing, so different - there's this tension, this raw clean air playing in the guitars - it's just so well arranged and yet unlike any record I've ever heard. The album never really had any commercial success but it's such a seminal record. I think it influenced a lot of bands along the way. It opened everyone’s ears to what you can do with an electric guitar. Both Duke and Steve (of Garbage) are huge fans of Marquee Moon and every now and then this record will pop up on our references. Sometimes we'll say, “You should do a guitar that sounds like a Television riff, that real tall angular sound."" One of the songs off our new album, Man On A Wire, has a little bit of a Television influence to it."

"You have to put Hendrix in there if we’re doing this properly. Why Axis I don’t know, but I remember I had a copy of that record without a cover as a kid so I made a cover for it. It was some religious record sleeve - there were all these new folk bands playing at churches in the early seventies - but there was no record in the sleeve and I fancied myself as a drawer so I took a magic marker and put the album title and drew my version of Hendrix playing the guitar. It was one of the earliest records I listened to – I’m from Seattle and everyone in Seattle has a Hendrix record or five. I thought I was being a little bit different going for Axis as a nine or ten year-old kid, 'cos it wasn’t one of the main records, it didn’t have any of the hits on it. It was kinda dark and twisted and cool. I think it stands the test of time musically."
