Erika Kehlet (21 KP) rated Better Off Thread (An Embroidery Mystery #10) in Books
Feb 21, 2018
Marcy shows up at the hospital ready to play elf for some sick children only to find that Santa, being played by her friend Captain Moe, is suspected of murdering a hospital administrator. Sure that the two detectives in charge of the case arent going to worry about finding another suspect since they have Moe, Marcy and friends decide to investigate on their own.
I was surprised to find out after I finished this book that it was #10 in the series. On the one hand, I should have guessed because the characters and their relationships with each other were all so well developed. I didnt feel like I was missing a lot of background though, so I assumed it was a newer series. Whether youve been with this one from the beginning or are just jumping in now, youll want to catch this installment. Better Off Thread is the perfect cozy to get you in the mood for a little holiday music and some Christmas shopping!

Andy K (10823 KP) rated Phantasm: Ravager (2016) in Movies

Great end to the Phantasm saga!
The final Phantasm film focuses mostly on everyone's favorite former ice cream man ,Reggie, and takes place through multi dimensions..
He keeps shifting through time and locations and is desperately trying to figure out which is real and how he can stop the Tall Man and his death spheres one final time.
The film find of reminded me of the final episode of Star Trek TNG when Captain Picard was kind of doing the same thing. It made the story interesting and not just more of the same. It also was mostly a continuation of the same story with some nostalgia since there had been almost twenty years since the last Phantasm film was made. I liked the continuity, but attempt to make something original.
The make up and special effects ranged from pretty good to almost Sharknado bad, so that was a little distracting.
I enjoyed watching and had a fun time with the Phantasm films in general. Generally speaking a cut above the normal generics horror schlock.

Ross (3284 KP) rated The Boys Volume 7: The Innocents in Books

More silliness, but cracks start to appear
In the seventh volume of The Boys, Hughie is again sent undercover to find out what is going on with a team of superheroes. This time it is to get in touch with Superduper, a sweet and innocent group of young supes keen to start helping people, but completely clueless. They have just received a new and very unsuitable leader in the form of Malchemical, like an evil Captain Planet who can also shapeshift. Hughie, as he did with the young G-Men team, develops a soft-spot for the hapless crew and defends them against Malchemical's abuse. He is saved by Butcher, whose appearance makes Hughie start to grow suspicious of his motives.
This continues in the second story, as Butcher sends Frenchie to eavesdrop on Homelander at the Christian supe festival, BELIEVE. We start to appreciate that Homelander is planning something outside his agreed work with Vought. Meanwhile, Butcher shows Hughie something that turns his world upside down and sees him leave The Boys.

Ross (3284 KP) rated Before Watchmen: Dollar Bill in Books

Brief story of Dollar Bill
Dollar Bill, one of the original Minutemen, is not one of those characters covered in detail in Watchmen (I can't even remember if he is mentioned at all). As outlined in the Minutemen series, Dollar Bill was originally a bank mascot, with the financial corporation looking to cash in on the superhero fad. The corporate ambitions soon go too far and Dollar Bill goes from being an advertising figurehead to part of the Minutemen, albeit one who lurks in the background and only comes out for the photoshoot. Over time, the man behind the mask starts to grow into the role and wants to fight crime for real. Sadly he hadn't watched the Incredibles and was undone by his ludicrous cape (which he was against from the start).
A decent single issue, and while it doesn't add much to the Watchmen canon, it gives more story to the character (who I think may have been included as something of a dig at Captain America).

Matthew Krueger (10051 KP) rated Mulan (1998) in Movies

Mulan- is a strange movie, cause it came out after "The Lion King". And the movie's after "The Lion King" were stange. What im saying is after "The Lion King", disney decided to go really strange/a huge left turn/didn't expect that/disappointed and overall a huge downfall. But i will get to those movies. Oh this is one of them.
Mulan does have good songs like.."True To Your Heart", "Reflection", "Honor To All Of Us" and "Ill Make A Man Out Of You".
The plot: Fearful that her ailing father will be drafted into the Chinese military, Mulan (Ming-Na Wen) takes his spot -- though, as a girl living under a patriarchal regime, she is technically unqualified to serve. She cleverly impersonates a man and goes off to train with fellow recruits. Accompanied by her dragon, Mushu (Eddie Murphy), she uses her smarts to help ward off a Hun invasion, falling in love with a dashing captain along the way.
Its a good movie, i liked it.

David McK (3731 KP) rated The Avengers (2012) in Movies

Known in the UK as 'Avenger's Assemble' (to avoid confusion with the other Avengers film!), this was the first of the MCUs big-screen cross-overs, bringing Captain America, Tony Stark/Iron Man, Bruce Banner/The Hulk (here played by Mark Ruffalo instead of Ed Norton), Thor, Black Widow and Hawkeye (and not forgetting Agent Coulson, pre TVs Agents of SHIELD!) all together for the very first time to face off against Thor's brother Loki, returned from the (supposed) dead and at the head of an army of Chitauri - with the post-credit sting revealing, for the very first time, just how is the 'big bad' behind the entire thing!
That 'Battle of New York' at the end of the film would have further ramifications down the line in both the movie and TV side of things for Marvel, with the (not shown here) clean up activities afterwards even providing the impetus for one of the newer (at the time of writing) releases, in Phase III's Spiderman: Homecoming
