Characters – Marcus has a dark past that he is running from, he returns to his childhood home to escape everything that could cause him problems, this sees him needing to look after his niece and nephew, one of which he has feelings for, but has always pushed away from ever giving into them. He believes his house is haunted which sees him needing to figure out what is real or not. Lily is the 17-year-old niece that has a past close relationship with her uncle, now she has grown up she gets caught in the middle of wanting a new one that does cross the line however wrong she sees it being. Spencer is the younger nephew that needs taking care off, Lily does it most of the time, with his fascination with insects keeping him entertained.
Performances – Trevor Long does give us a disturbing performance, where we see just how conflicted he is through the events of the film, Andrea Chen shines too which is important for her role in the film. Garr Long and the rest of the cast have all done well through the film without taking over from the two leads.
Story – The story follows a man dealing with his past while looking after his niece and nephew, believing there is a creature living in his home. This story can be broken down into dealing with temptation and letting the evil in the world manifesting into a thing of nightmares. If we dive deeper, we will end up going full spoilers. The tone of story is unsettling and disturbing throughout, it almost feels like you want to turn away, but you want to know just what is happening at the same time.
Horror – The horror comes from the visits from the long legged creature in the shadows, it only strikes at night, when Marcus is most vulnerable.
Settings – The film is set in one location, a beach house which shows us just where one man will go for time away from the world to fix his mind.
Special Effects – The effects used to create the creature are creepy and feel like they could come for the people being haunted by them.
Scene of the Movie – The first creature appearance.
That Moment That Annoyed Me – It does get too deep in places.
Final Thoughts – This is a horror that is looking at life and how it decisions can have different results for the people involved.
Overall: Deep horror.
Performances – Trevor Long does give us a disturbing performance, where we see just how conflicted he is through the events of the film, Andrea Chen shines too which is important for her role in the film. AWAKENING OF THE STARBORNE is the first book in The Game of Endings and Beginnings. It is an epic fantasy, so expect a large page count, but trust me when I say it is worth it! There are trigger warnings for this book, so take note!
We begin with Savaé as a child, and what a childhood she had. However, Sully, a quiet blacksmith, takes her in and becomes her adoptive father. Sully is a great character for the time he is in the book, and I would love to know more of his past, but that's another story. Back to Savaé. She wants to become an Ellian Knight, one of the protectors of the realm. To do so, she needs to pass three trials, so Sully trains her. She has a lot to overcome and has her own coping mechanisms. Are they healthy? Well, I'll let you decide that! At her first trial, she meets Sølas, not knowing that things are about to change her life.
Sølas is such an outstanding character. There is so much I could say about him, but I don't want to give anything away. He is gorgeous, protective (think Touch-Her-And-D!e), and will not do anything to hurt Savaé. In fact, I don't think he physically can! He is her support system when she doesn't even think she needs one.
I was completely hooked on this book! The story is dark and full of action, with a fascinating group of characters that both help and hinder. Told mostly from Savaé's perspective, you get an inside seat on what she is thinking and feeling. As I said, this is epic, so it includes lots of descriptions (that are fantastic) plus betrayals, action, and more plot twists than you can shake a stick at. The ending just about killed me, but it has left me with a longing for the next book. I can already see this is a series I will buy as a hardcopy and re-read many times.
As a debut book, this was outstanding in pretty much every way. However, some of the segues and transitions from one scene to the next were either jarring or not entirely clear. And that is me being exceedingly picky! I loved this book and HIGHLY RECOMMEND it to any fantasy lovers out there.

I just got done reading The Patient by Jasper Dewitt and was not expecting to get sucked into a one morning read-a-thon. I think I read it in maybe 2 ½ hours. With that being said, I gave this book a 3-star review, although it should be a 3 ½-star review. I will start with the good and end with the bad.
A young, overconfident psychiatrist gets a new job at a mental asylum and chronicles his attempts to treat a profoundly disturbed patient who has been in the hospital since early childhood through a series of online posts. Each chapter is a new day and a new post that Parker has shared with the readers. This manuscript writing style was a unique way to give us Parker’s perspective and account of what occurred with patient “Joe”. I also enjoyed the transcripts and the audio tapes added into the chapters. These few thing added more layers to the story, sucked you in deeper, and gave an unexpecting twist to the book. It was like you were really reading a true account from whom it occurred to.
After reading all the hype and the synopsis of the book, I was hooked and reeled in. A psychiatrist, a mental patient, an asylum set in my home state of Connecticut, strange occurrences to those who have treated patient “Joe”, misdiagnosis’, undiagnosis’, a 30 plus year mystery … The Patient seemed to have it all!!! Even dark, creepy, supernatural horror!!! A perfectly blended cocktail of psychological thriller and supernatural horror.
Unfortunately, it fell flat for me. I kept anticipating more twists, turns, gore and scare. I wanted this book to haunt me well after I finished. The ending felt rushed and not well thought out, I felt like I was cheated out of being scared out of my mind. There was enough horror, suspense, thrills and mystery to keep me reading but after completing The Patient, I just felt let down. I feel like even as the story unfolds, Jasper could have gotten more in depth with the creepy and horror factor but instead it was almost basic. I tried to let my imagination scare with the images the author tries to put in your mind but again I was disappointed.
If you want a quick read that will scare you a little but will keep the suspense up, then pick this up because one person’s opinion is not another’s and who knows, you might scare more easily than me.
