David McK (3475 KP) rated Waylander II: In the Realm of the Wolf in Books
Sep 26, 2021
Of his works, I find the Drenai series to be the best.
There, what, eleven novels in that series, all of which are largely stand-alone.
Out of those eleven, there's only a handful of novels centred around recurring key characters characters: most noticeably those with Druss (in order published, Legend, The First Chronicles of Druss the Legend and The Legend of Deathwalker (although he also appears in both White Wolf and The Swords of Night and Day), and those around the assassin Waylander)
This is the second of the three Waylander novels (Waylander, Waylander II: In the Realm of the Wolf and Hero in the Shadows ) which starts with Walyander and his adopted daughter Miriel living in quiet harmony in the wooded peaks, with Waylander - Dakeyras - mourning the death of his love Danyal. However, when a price is once more put on his head, Waylander finds himself pulled back into action, as Miriel and several of her companions find themselves going to the aid of the nomadic Nadir.
There may be an element of truth in the charge against Gemmell that some of his novels may be formulaic - we usually have a troubled hero, the mystic Source priests and their musings on life and death and the nature of evil, and - more often than not - a siege of some kind, but when the novels are all as good as this ... ?

With Silent Screams ( Hellequin book 3)
By Steve McHugh
Once read a review will be written via Smashbomb and link posted in comments
His name is Nathan Garrett, but he's also known as Hellequin. And murdering one of his friends and trying to blow him up is a good way to get this centuries-old sorcerer's full attention... An old friend's dead body, a cryptic note, and an explosion that almost costs him his own life propel Nate headfirst into a mystery involving a new threat from an old foe. Now he must piece together the connections between a grisly series of tattooed murder victims, an imprisoned madman, a mysterious alchemist, and a deranged plot to usurp the throne of the hidden realm of Shadow Falls, rival to the power of Avalon.
Can Nate avert the coming slaughter, or will he become the latest to fall in this clandestine war?
With the story careening between modern-day New York and Ontario and 1977 Maine, With Silent Screams continues the gritty and action-packed mix of urban fantasy and ancient mythology that mark Steve McHugh's popular Hellequin Chronicles.
This is becoming one of my favourite series and they are getting better with every book! This is book 3 and the best one yet it’s so intricate without being overbearing. I love Nate and his many friends figures from real history and fictional. I could read these over and over. Brilliant series!

This is a gripping and thrilling first instalment that ends on an amazing cliffhanger! Full of mystery and action, you are left with questions unanswered. I won't put the questions out here, you'll need to read the book for yourself, but I will say that you will immediately want to know more. Excellent start and definitely recommended.

Prison of Hope ( Hellequin Chronicles book 4)
By Steve McHugh
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Long ago, Olympian gods imprisoned the demon Pandora in a human—Hope—creating a creature whose only purpose was chaos and death. Remorseful, the gods locked Pandora away in Tartarus, ruled by Hades.
Now, centuries later, Pandora escapes. Nate Garrett, a 1,600-year-old sorcerer, is sent to recapture her and discovers her plan to disrupt the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games, killing thousands in a misplaced quest for vengeance.
Fast forward to modern-day Berlin, where Nate has agreed to act as guardian on a school trip to Germany to visit Hades at the entrance to Tartarus. When Titan King Cronus becomes the second ever to escape Tartarus, Nate is forced to track him down and bring him back, to avert a civil war between those who would use his escape to gain power.
I love love love this series! This has to be the best one yet. I really like the way the author uses the Greek gods and mythology as well as bringing all the myths and legends into the story without it getting silly. Nate is just brilliant I love his relationship with Tommy and other characters. I like the back story of Nate’s life that runs along with whatever he’s facing in current times. It’s such a good series.

SOME PEOPLE AREN'T DESTINED TO BE ORDINARY.
Sophia Woodville holds a secret gift close to her heart.
A 20-year-old nursing grad, she thought she had her future mapped out. However, destiny is about to intervene.
A night out ends in bloodshed with Sophia now hunted by an unspeakable evil. She is whisked away by her family, a family she thought she knew, a family who holds secrets more powerful and darker than her own.
Her secret is not so secret. Her gift just a hint of something far beyond her wildest imagination. Sophia is pulled, kicking and screaming, into an unseen, ancient world of angels and demons. A beautiful and terrifying world that challenges all that she thought to be true of herself, her family and the origins of humanity.
Sophia cannot simply visit this world... she must save it.
Original sin, forbidden love and her life in constant danger...
Will Sophia survive this dark twist of fate?
Will the devil be her saviour?
This was one hell of a book I don’t think I’ve read anything like it the amazing amount of detail gone into it is just extraordinary. Take everything you think you know about how the world was mad, angels and demons then add some. It was just so involved the characters were all so well thought out and intricate. Just loved it.
