"Oh, John Hughes…(sigh). A producer friend of mine was recently talking about his teenage daughter and said “You know, the problem is, she’s never seen a real film because they don’t make real movies for kids anymore.” Looking back at The Breakfast Club (which I must’ve watched 40 times by the time I was in the 6th grade), Sixteen Candles, St. Elmo’s Fire, et al — these were real movies. And Jesus, could we relate to them. Many still hold up — if you can ignore the acid-wash and the hair mousse."

"It’s overly glib to call a book a page-turner. But the fact is, I entered this one somewhat casually, with few expectations: widowed mother and spinster daughter fall on hard times and turn their house into a bed-sit? What else is new? What was new were the tenants who turned life upside down in startlingly erotic and terrifying ways. I could not put this one down. And in fact I would pick it up again in a heartbeat—even knowing what happens. It’s how it happens that grabs you and won’t let go."

"I found this book interesting, uncomfortably informative, addictive and necessary. “Looking for Palestine” is a memoir/coming-of-age by the young Najla Said, an actress, writer and daughter of the brilliant Edward Said (a Columbia professor and prominent advocate of Palestine independence), and Mariam Said (artist, writer and activist). I’ve seen Najla’s play of the same name, but her book took me even further into this young New Yorker’s quest to make some sense of all of her worlds. If your goal is to be immersed and moved, this is it."

"I remember reading the hardback first edition of “Backlash” (a feminist classic) in the backseat of a friend’s Buick on the way home from a particularly wild Catskills trip, simultaneously swallowing Doritos and my rage and sadness at the reality of antifeminist backlash. Faludi has published an updated version — especially relevant in our new Trump America — just as interesting, motivating and rage-inducing as the first. This book hurts, but it moves us forward. “Backlash” continues to be an informative wake up call for women of my and my daughter Samia’s generation."

"I recently met with his daughter, Mary Aarons. She was telling me how hard her father worked, traveling the world and taking all these incredible photos. It was his job. A perfectly normal dad from Connecticut jet-setting internationally. I'd like to congratulate Getty Images for saving all these photos that were stashed in his attic! It's a miracle they weren't all ruined. Now that everyone with a phone is considered a photographer, it's fun to a imagine a time when you had to wait to see what the world was up to."
