I listened to this frankly stunning novel on audiobook via NetGalley. I think that this will be a book that people will want to read in one sitting - I couldn’t put it down (which makes work really inconvenient!).

Three friends reunite after many years. Mush has stayed in Kinlough, Joe has become a famous singer, and Helen has been working as a journalist in Canada. As teenagers, they hung around in a group of six, until one of its most popular members (Kala) goes missing. It seems that her disappearance has had a huge effect on all of her friends since then. Helen comes home for a wedding and during this time, remains are found in a hold-all. And they’re Kala.

Mush helps his mother run a coffee shop and is, I think, the most likeable character. He wants to pick up friendships where they were left off after Joe and Helen had left. I can’t help but think that Helen uses this as a way to get him to help her look into the disappearance of Kala.

This isn’t just about Kala though. It’s a book that looks at all of these characters and their lives. They all have issues of one kind or another, whether these issues are caused by Kala’s disappearance, their family lives or something more - the town itself has a violent undercurrent.

It’s beautifully written: the snatches of scenes from childhood are idyllic, the interactions of the characters range from funny to sad to menacing. Do these characters really know one another, and who can they trust? There are a lot of lies to uncover!

I will be very keen to read whatever Colin Walsh writes next - he’s definitely one to watch!

Informative but far too long
Listened on Audible.
While I loved the concept of raising awareness for dementia sufferers and how frustrating it can be to lose oneself, listening to this gave me a bit of a headache as it was far too long. This is definitely better as a book and not for Audible - you lose track of the Maud's meandering. And while it is based on the tragic circumstances of her sister's disappearance - I actually ended up losing focus over who she was actually talking about after a while. A good effort.

Slick, intelligent thriller with a lot of twists
It's been a while since I've a genuinely coherent thriller. The characters are fabulous, two guys, one secretly in love with the other, just attempting to find and understand the disappearance of two boys. There is twist after twist, but while there is zero character development, the plot is enough to keep listening. It's slightly different to the current theme of 'neurotic woman finds killer' story. It is also very witty in places and extremely dark. A thoroughly enjoyable listen.

Gripping, moving and thought-provoking, this short series follows a troubled journalist who returns to her childhood hometown to chronicle the investigation into a recent death and new disappearance of young girls. The series covers her issues, her family troubles, the town's history and the underlying layer of grime beneath the Southern hospitality. There are a number of strands to this series, all of which could have filled a series on their own, and are seamlessly intertwined to one complete storyline.
Excellently acted, written and directed, this series does not put a foot wrong.

A suspenseful thriller from American author Harlan Coben, released a few years ago but this is a good Ôstand aloneÕ story that will introduce you to the dark world of gritty crime that he writes so well.
The central character, Paul Copeland, is the County Prosecutor of Essex, New Jersey. Twenty years ago his sister, and three other teenagers, disappeared from a summer camp and now ÔCopeÕ finds himself embroiled in a case that may provide some answers to their disappearance. A great thriller with plenty of interesting characters and plot twists.
