Hidden Run is a B&B in the small town of Canyon Mines, just outside of Denver, Colorado. When a stranger comes to town looking lost, Jillian and her father Nolan are determined to help her find her way. Meri comes from a family of doctors, but that is not what she wants to do. Maybe coming to Colorado, a place she last felt like herself will help her to find the future that is best for her.

The title of this book really isn't fitting for what it contains. It's much more than the Inn. That is where Meri is situated while in Colorado, but it's really about the people in the town that help her when she is lost. Meri loves her family, but doesn't feel the calling to be a doctor like everyone else for generations has been. When she comes to Canyon Mines, Jillian, who is a genealogist, helps her to find her family roots and maybe explain while she feels the way she does.

I gave this book three stars, because it didn't grasp my attention right away. At times it felt as if the story line kept repeating the same things, like the author copy and pasted a line from one chapter to all the other chapters in the book. Overall the book is enjoyable, trading from modern day Colorado, to 1800's Memphis during the yellow fever outbreak. This is a good book for those the enjoy historical fiction. I did learn a lot about that epidemic which includes some very factual details in this story.

I finished this a while ago and it has taken me a while to find the words to describe how heartbreaking this truly is. This book is filled with diary entries from a doctor: from training to the end of his career. Behind the hysterically funny incidents (it amazing what people shove up vaginas and bum holes) is the painful truth in how we are working our NHS staff to the ground. How they have to advocate healthy mental well-being, work-life balance and self care but the majority of the time they cannot practice these vital aspects of life themselves. And it's through no fault of their own. It's through a system that is so understaffed that it relies on the goodwill of staff and something has to give. I cried for Adam when I read the diary entry about picking up his stuff after the break up from his partner. Another thing that shocked me about the anecdotes is how surprisingly "throw them in the deep end" the training seems to be. It must be truly terrifying to have a training system that is "watch once, do once, teach once". Please don't be put off by the negativity I've seemed to have painted here. It is truly an hilarious book. There are some really memorable anecdotes that had me in stitches and that I keep telling my friends about: my favourite being the sharpener comparison (I shan't spoil it for you, if you've read it and know what I'm talking about just give me a wave!) I cannot wait to read Adam's next book. It's on my Christmas list 😉

Missing Doctor Leads Kinsey to Peril

Nine weeks ago, Dr. Dowan Purcell vanished without a trace. Now, his ex-wife, Fiona, has hired PI Kinsey Millhone to figure out what happened to him. Kinsey isn’t sure she can cover any ground that the police haven’t already covered because they have been as thorough as they can be, but she gamely agrees anyway. Soon, she is caught in a web of speculation. It seems everyone has a theory, from Fiona to Dr. Purcell’s current wife, Crystal, to family and friends. But can Kinsey find any clue to figure out what actually happened to him?

The mystery starts well as always, and I was soon caught up in the case. There is a very strong sub-plot that helped draw me further into the story. I love Kinsey and the other regulars, so it is always fun to spend time with them, and the new characters are just as strong. Even the weather, a cold November rain, helped add the right atmosphere to the book. Then I got to the ending. The book just stops. It’s very abrupt. While I have a theory on what happened and why, it would have been nice to have it confirmed, especially since I can come up with another equally as compelling theory on what happened and why. These kinds of endings work for literary novels, but are frustrating for mystery readers. Fans of the series will still be glad they read this entry, but new readers definitely shouldn’t jump in here since there are stronger books in the series.

Low Budget but Fun

414. 3022. In space, no one can hear you scream. However, if you're desperate need of a smoke, this space station has plenty. The budget for this one must've come from tobacco, I'm telling ya! The premise is this: Four astronauts embark on a mission to the refueling station, Pangea, between Earth and mankind's first space colony on Europa. I would've thought we would've tried our first space colony a little closer to home, like the moon maybe, but sure halfway across the solar system works too. Their mission, from what I saw, nothing. I guess they refuel ships on their way back and forth. Oh and their mission is 10 years long. My guess is by the year 2190, not 3022 by the way, refueling stations in space probably won't need people on them at all, nevermind for a 10 year stretch. But whatev's it's just a movie. Five years into the mission however, something goes wrong, the little blip on the radar that signifies Earth, it just disappeared. What is 4 people to do on a space station after they just discovered they are now an endangered species? Go crazy of course! Whats one thing that spaceship disaster movies have in common, the onboard doctor goes bonkers, Angus Macfadyen fills the roll in this one while Omar Epps and Kate Walsh try to keep it together! It's a fun low budget sci fi flick. They keep the effects to a minimum, and sure there's a few bad edits, glasses on, glasses off. Other than that, I enjoyed it. Filmbufftim on FB!
