I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads.

Review of an uncorrected bound manuscript.
The One Safe Place is a gripping tale by Tania Unsworth aimed at older children, although completely enjoyable by teens and adults too. Written in the third person and set in the not so distant future, we follow Devin’s story.

In the future the climate has changed, the temperature has risen and rain is very rare. The opening scene reveals Devin, a young boy, on a farm, digging a grave to bury his grandfather who has recently died (presumably of old age and not something sinister). Devin, now alone, decides to head to the city, a place he has never visited, in order to find some help for the farm. The problem is he has never once left the farm and knows nothing of the real world. Here he meets Kit, a young girl on her own living on the roof of a building, and decides to tag along with her. But then they meet Roman who promises them a safe home. Although skeptical, they decide to trust him and thus they arrive at the Gabriel H. Penn Home For Childhood. The place is amazing and has everything a child could want: toys, games, clothes, individual bedrooms, a swimming pool, and most importantly, food and drink. So why are all the other children walking around in limbo, uninterested in everything around them?

Devin, with the help of his friends, and his synesthesia, soon discovers and pieces together what is wrong about the home. The pace picks up as they plan their escape leading to the exciting ending.

The One Safe Place is a book young readers will love. Well what child would not love a book where the children outsmart the adults?

I wasn't sure that I wanted to read this because looking at the cover reminded me of nuns and I really didn't want to read about nouns. As I heard people talking about this book I finally decided to give it try.
I was pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed this book. This book talks about the world as we know it but is no longer the same. We are still around but have gone back a little in time. The women are no longer allowed to hold jobs, have money or property. Everything they have now is now owned by the men.
Our main character is known as a handmaid and her job is to have babies. She is assigned to a family and once a month she has relations with the husband and yes the wife knows in fact she is there with them. She has a very boring life. She is only allowed to eat certain things and can not smoke or drink. She is allowed once a day to go outside to run an errand for the cook. She is not allowed to go by herself she meets up with another handmaid and they shop together. They are watched all the time.
She is adjusting but can still remember what life was like back a few years ago. Before all the changes she was married and had a little girl. She doesn't know what happened to her husband or her child.
You must read this book to find out the changes and how she got where she is now. The ending leaves a little to the imagination. Please give it a try, it is a good story.

Absolute Garbage From Start To Finish
I have a pretty high tolerance of cheesy horseshit in movies - I am a fan of even the more poorly received Fast & Furious movies, - but this one took it too far, even for me.
I wanted to like this thing, I like the Rock, I like big dumb blockbusters, I enjoyed the trailers for this movie and I like Die Hard, which was clearly a major inspiration for this film. I didn't like it, any of it. From start to finish I went from cringe to cringe.

The quality of this movie is something that you might expect from something from early in the Rock's acting career, just after he broke away from wrestling and way before he was a big name in Hollywood, but this comes out now, after he has starred in movies like Fast & Furious and Moana. Not that Fast & Furious and Moana are deep, Oscar-worthy movies, but compared to Skyscraper they at lease deserve a nomination!

The only positive that I can give this movie is that it may be an okay film to put on in the background. Maybe if you have some friends over for a drink, this might be a good shout to put on in the background on low volume or if you are looking for something to have on while you tidy the house or go for a nap, then this is the film for you.

Overall, I am honestly really disappointed in the Rock for being in this atrocity, I thought he was above trash like this, but apparently I should have known better. Please, do yourself a favour and don't waste your time with this pointless nonsense like I did.

Celeste Arrazolo is a singer-songwriter from Houston, Texas. Not too long ago, she released a lyric video for her debut single, entitled, “Caution”.

“I’m not going. I’m not leaving this bar or this place. I came here for answers. Made so many mistakes. I’ve been down, I’ve been low, I’ve been high every chance that I get. It’s been such a lonely road ain’t got no relief yet.” – lyrics

‘Caution’ tells a bittersweet tale of a girl with sad eyes who doesn’t want to leave a bar because she’s searching for answers to her problems.

The bartender is sympathetic to her cause and offers her one last drink before the bar closes.

Lost in the moment, the girl reveals that religion has deserted her, and God has forgotten her name.

Later, she admits that no smart person should want any part of her because she’s a mess. Also, she’ll bring them down and hurt them with lies to survive. Therefore, they should proceed with caution when dealing with her.

‘Caution’ contains a relatable storyline, ear-welcoming vocals, and melodic instrumentation flavored with emo-soul and R&B elements.

“‘Caution’ is a climax in an internal struggle. It’s about losing your way. I want listeners to be able to meet me in that moment.” – Celeste Arrazolo

Celeste Arrazolo flew to Los Angeles as soon as she had her diploma in hand. Shortly afterward, she encountered hard times, and her life spiraled out of control.

She turned to music for solace and eventually discovered a path to redemption and freedom. Through endless hours of studying powerhouse singers and songwriters, Arrazolo learned to translate her experience into her music.

I was gripped from episode 1 of 13 Reasons. The cast of young actors and actresses are brilliant, and they made it a really gripping show.

The show not only touches upon, but runs head long into some very serious, hard hitting subjects, including sexual assault and rape, bullying, sexuality, drink driving, peer pressure and, of course, mental health and suicide. So, definitely not one for the easily upset. It portrays all of them in a very honest, very graphic way. It can definitely be upsetting, but is very thought provoking and helps you see things from several different perspectives. It was great seeing mental health finally being spoken about and highlighted in such a mainstream way, without it being belittled.

The storyline follows Clay, a teenage boy, who has recently suffered a bereavement in the form if the suicide of his friend and love interest, Hannah. Some time after Hannah's death, a package containing several tapes is delivered to Clay's house, with instructions for him to listen to them. Every side of each tape describes how each of the 13 people the tapes are intended for contributed to Hannah feeling as she did. Not only does she explain her feelings and why she committed suicide, but also how their actions have had repercussions for other people. They reveal, deep, dark and dangerous secrets about a large number of peoole at their High School, and the revelation of the tapes to the public has the potential to destroy multiple lives, and sees multiple people getting hurt, physically and emotionally.

How far will Clay listen? Can he change things to make things right for others? Can he get restitution for Hannah? And what dark secrets is he going to reveal along the way? Hit play, and find out! You won't regret it.

Ma (2019)
2019 | Horror, Thriller
Olivia Spencer gives a tour de force performance as a "unbalanced" veterinary assistant. I call it "unbalanced" because it is not really clear whether or not she is mentally ill, sociopathic, or just megalomaniacal. In Ma, a teenager moves back to her mom's hometown and makes friends with a group of teenagers who include the son of a prominent businessman. The friends with nothing to do in the town decide to get some booze and go down in the quarry to drink it, like a bunch of teenagers from the 70s. How to get the booze is the problem. Then, Sue Ann whom the teens start to call Ma, out walking one of the canine patients reluctantly agrees. Given how uncool she was in high school, she attempts to be the cool adult to these teenagers. However her social skills need a lot of work and she ends up seeming a little off to everyone. At this point, she goes off the handle and starts to torment the teenagers and all of her former classmates from high school, including Erica (the single mother), Ben (the divorced father), and Mercedes (Ben's slutty lover). She also for no discernible reason other than she just plain dislikes her murders her boss, the town veterinarian which seems irresponsible. In the end, the teenagers are able to save themselves from the twisted Ma, burn down her house, and Ma decides to cuddle up with the "love of her life" Ben who had raped her in high school. Maybe it is a comment on toxic masculinity and the effects it has on weaker women or the bonds formed between a rapist and his victim. Either way the film leaves many questions and is only saved by the performance of Olivia Spencer.
