Poor and unoriginal
How is Keanu Reeves still working? I really don’t get it. He’s one of the worst actors I’ve ever seen and whilst it’s entertaining in a way and very laughable, I just don’t understand how anyone can take his films seriously. Especially a film like this that needs some form of decent acting.
The film itself is unoriginal, it’s a story we’ve seen many times before and sadly one that’s been done better too. The effects are decent and it was good to see that the story didn’t pan out quite the way I was expecting (like a full on horror). However I just found this so laughable because of Keanu Reeves and I actually may have taken it more seriously had it been a different star.

Better than expected
I hadn’t heard much about this film and was after a horror film to round off my evening, so thought I’d give this one a go on Netflix and was actually pleasantly surprised. It’s not the best horror I’ve ever seen but it sure isn’t the worst either. It starts off in one direction and by the end has completely flipped into a plot that you weren’t expecting, and for the better.
There are good performances in this although I do think Lily Tomlin was underused, as was Sadie Sink from Stranger Things. The effects are mostly good but there are some slightly dodgy ones at parts. Overall this is just a decent watchable horror that succeeds mainly because it doesn’t end the way you’d expect.

Well-known sci-fi movie is too camp to take seriously, but scores points for inventiveness. Most of the plot is pure maguffinery, there to facilitate a) the central notion of miniaturised people floating around inside someone's body and b) Raquel Welch in a wetsuit (clearly they haven't quite cracked a method of miniaturising Welch's hair).
Vivid but not remotely convincing special effects, stolid performances from the cast, and a plot which really does have issues going on: the casting alone makes it very obvious who the traitor is going to be, while the climax conveniently forgets that the patient's convalescence is likely to be impacted by the presence of a full-size submarine inside his brain. It's watchable, not least for the groovy 60s stylings, but not as a serious drama.

A film that had a very interesting sounding concept that could have been potentially explored really well in something exciting and challenging was unfortunately a massively wasted opportunity . Sadly I just found the film boring and uninspired and I got really fed up with looking at endless scenes of train carriage and snowy landscapes. The film had a great cast but managed to squander them and nobody puts in a particularly memorable performance. They must have blown the budget on the cast as the special effects also looked cheap and unrealistic . I don’t know if I’m missing something here as it has a reasonable imdb score but when I keep finding myself reaching for my phone to play with instead of looking at the screen you know something ain’t right.

Finally Spider-man gets to be with MJ!
The beginning setting up with Mysterio (sic) felt just a little tedious. Could definitely tell that guy was fake, just a bit too 'nice'. Kept thinking he was a lame Mr Strange with a bowl on his head.
Peter's bravery even though he doesn't want to save the world just speaks to his character. I would love more sarcasm from Peter.
The action sequences were great, special effects great, views while he is swinging around great, a rollercoaster of fun with slow bits for conversation. Remembering Tony Stark was a nice touch. A perfectly good addition for Marvel fans.

The plot can be written on the back of a postage stamp (massive earthquake destroys most of California) but I found this to be surprisingly enjoyable addition to the crowded disaster movie field. The action is very satisfying and the special effects impressive, not as obviously cgi as some of these films can be. Where this film succeeds is in it’s casting. Dwayne Johnson makes for a likeable and charismatic lead and there’s solid support from Paul Giamatti’s quake studying scientist and Alexandra Daddario as Dwayne’s resourceful (and absolutely gorgeous) daughter. Of course it does fall victim to a few familiar cliches and I rolled my eyes at the final shot of a battered Stars and Stripes flying in the wind when the carnage ends but overall I did have allot of fun watching this.

Barry Newman (204 KP) rated Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) in Movies

The sequel to 2014's disappointingly action light reboot is thankfully an improvement and contains an abundance of giant monsters smashing the shit out of world landmarks and each other. The plot is of course complete gubbins but they have a pretty decent cast who do the best they can to take the material seriously. As a big 'Stranger Things' fan I find it pretty hard to dislike Millie Bobby Brown even if her character here is nowhere near as interesting. The main selling point of the film is of course the monsters and I thought the special effects were very impressive. My advice is to just switch your brain off and enjoy the sheer stupid spectacle of it all and you'll get some fun out of it.
