Awix (3310 KP) rated Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) in Movies
Apr 2, 2021 (Updated Apr 7, 2021)
Epically corny monster mash. When Godzilla suddenly seems to become hostile to the human race, Monarch recruits Kong to lead researchers to the hollow earth in pursuit of a new energy source that will allow them to defeat the giant lizard. But just what has got the Big G so riled?
Scores extremely heavily on the garish spectacle front, with monster rasslin' aplenty and some eye-catching visuals (although it does feel like the earth's core is next door to the uncanny valley). However, the film is often critically under-exposited and many of the plot devices and developments are frankly nonsensically. Various actors do their best not to get overshadowed by the special effects, usually to no avail, Kong gets more screen-time than Godzilla, the new design of a classic Toho monster is rather decent, and the various fights are thumpingly effective. Not as good as either the last Kong or Godzilla standalone movie, but reasonably effective goofy blockbuster fun nevertheless.

LeftSideCut (3776 KP) rated Stung (2015) in Movies
Feb 10, 2021
If you're looking for an entertaining as hell, throwback creature feature, then look no further.
Stung is a perfectly imperfect B-Movie horror about some mutated wasps causing havoc at a garden party, leading to giant mutated wasps bursting out of various party guests, hell bent on feasting on any survivors. It's really really silly, but manages to be frequently funny, impressively gory, and shamelessly schlocky.
It has two likable protagonists in Matt O'Leary and Jessica Cook, and it's a nice surprise to see that Lance Henriksen wasn't just a cameo. It's let down a little by some dodgy CGI, but a lot of the gory scenes are practical, and a lot of the action takes place at night, so the effects aren't too much of an eyesore.
Stung is a straight up trashy good time, and the often used Wilhelm scream gets given to a wasp, which is low key hilarious, and absolutely slayed me, so bonus points there.

LeftSideCut (3776 KP) rated Dead Ant (2017) in Movies
Feb 16, 2021
Let's get the obvious out of the way first...the CGI giant ants, or course, look awful...but honestly, if one can look beyond that, Dead Ant is a genuinely funny and entertaining B-Movie blast.
It has a cast that's not to be sniffed at - Sean Astin, Tom Arnold, Jake Busey, Danny Woodburn, Twin Peaks legend Michael Horse, Sydney Sweeney, Entourage's Rhys Coiro - not too shabby for a low budget creature feature.
It's screenplay is constantly humourous, and everyone involved seems like they're having a good time.
As mentioned, the special effects are bargain bin level, but I don't know, that sort of adds to the whole experience.
I might just be a sucker for heavy metal themed comedies, but Dead Ant is a perfectly fine way to spend 90 minutes, and the song "Sideboob" from the movies fictional band Sonic Grave is now on one of my Spotify playlists 🤘

Awix (3310 KP) rated Dracula Untold (2014) in Movies
Jan 10, 2021
Untold, uninspired, and underwhelming take on a Dracula origin story, very much in the style of a comic book movie. Historians look away: Vlad Tepes is a client king of the Turks, who is forced to rebel against them and seeks out demonic, blood-sucking powers to help him defeat his opponents. (Charles Dance, playing his mentor in evil, is the best thing in the movie.)
Mildly diverting as an empty spectacle (gasp as Superdrac uses his FIST OF BATS power to squish the Turks!) but essentially useless: the film fails to engage with either the historical Vlad the Impaler or the iconic Dracula. Luke Evans fails to communicate any essential darkness lurking in his character, just coming across as a nice guy who makes a bad decision under pressure. If Dracula's not going to be a properly evil monster, what's the point of him? Good effects and reasonable art direction, but misses the point in every narrative sense.

LeftSideCut (3776 KP) rated Sharknado (2013) in Movies
Sep 17, 2019
Jesus. H. Christ.
It's 2019, and I've finally sat down and watched Sharknado, after hearing many years worth of friends and even random people tell me how it's the epitome of a bad-good movie.
That, my friends, is just a big fat badly-rendered shark of a lie.
There is nothing redeemable about Sharknado. The acting from everyone is awful and the special effects are laughable (Easily worse than a late 90s music video).
There are some scenes that just baffle me with their inclusion. Nothing really makes sense, and all of this would be perfectly acceptable if it was indeed 'bad-good' or mildly funny, but any attempt at humour made me want to tear my ears off.
I would say a hard avoid on this one, but I'm going to persevere and watch the whole lot of them, just to add a review here. Will they get better as they go on? Pretty sure they can't get any worse!
