Bargain-basement everything-but-the-kitchen-sink horror movie. Three young women accidentally summon up a homicidal elf as part of a conspiracy to take over the world. Features a lengthy scene in which a department-store Santa (Dan Haggerty) engages in a gun battle with neo-Nazi agents, while the young female leads are stalked by a knife-wielding glove puppet. (The film is not nearly as good as it sounds.)

Sort of a slasher movie, sort of a monster movie, but definitely tasteless and tacky schlock by any reasonable metric. It seems to be trying to play the knowingly-ironic card at a few points, but it's simply not accomplished enough to pull that off: it looks cheap, sounds cheap, has long stretches where not much happens, and there's the obligatory badly-edited and confusing climax. Would be virtually unwatchable if not for an heroic performance by Dan Haggerty, who for some reason is taking this fiasco seriously. Nasty, brutish, but not nearly short enough.

The first entry in this series (Two Necromancers, a Bureaucrat, and an Elf was recommended to me by a friend.

After reading it, I felt it wasn't long enough; felt that it was more of an entry to the series (like a story you get in one of those omnibus editions that have several authors) than a novel in its own right.

This one is different.

I don't mean different in subject matter, or even in content - it follows the same basic 3-act structure as before - but different in that it 'felt' longer; felt more like a full-blown story in its own right.

The title, however, gives the plot away: Act 1 is the heroes(?) of the story being given their newest mission, Act 2 is the fight against an army of Golems and Act 3 is another fight against - yes, you guessed it! - a Demon Lord.

Passes the time.

Unexpected Complications at Christmas
December is always busy for April Claus, wife of Santa. But this year, a baby elf is left at the castle with a note asking April to take care of the baby. While she tries to track down the baby’s family, she is also involved in the current stage production of A Christmas Carol, and one of the actors is poisoned during a rehearsal. Can April solve both mysteries?

I am always thrilled when a new entry in this series finds its way to me. The pacing was off in this book, but both storylines did reach satisfying conclusions. The characters continue to charm, and I loved catching up with them again. The new cast are just as strong. And I couldn’t help but laugh and smile as I read. Whether new to the series or a fan from the beginning, you’ll be glad you picked up this book.

Marcy shows up at the hospital ready to play elf for some sick children only to find that Santa, being played by her friend Captain Moe, is suspected of murdering a hospital administrator. Sure that the two detectives in charge of the case aren’t going to worry about finding another suspect since they have Moe, Marcy and friends decide to investigate on their own.

I was surprised to find out after I finished this book that it was #10 in the series. On the one hand, I should have guessed because the characters and their relationships with each other were all so well developed. I didn’t feel like I was missing a lot of background though, so I assumed it was a newer series. Whether you’ve been with this one from the beginning or are just jumping in now, you’ll want to catch this installment. Better Off Thread is the perfect cozy to get you in the mood for a little holiday music and some Christmas shopping!

Originally picked up on a whim (as a Christmas present from my Amazon wishlist back in the early 2010s), and I'm glad I did. Be looking for more of this series, methinks.

<edit in 2018>
I've just re-read this again, and can fill in a bit more now than my previous 'review' (above).

This falls firmly into the Urban Fantasy genre, mainly told in the first person, with Cal(iban) Leandros the main narrator of the story, and with the Grendels (or Auphe, or Elf!) the main antagonists: the main, but not the only. In this world (or New York), there's also a Boggle in the park, Trolls (at least one) in the underground, Werewolves, Vampires and other associated mythological creatures, including one who takes a prominent role: that of Darkling (whose sisters are the Banshees of Irish myth). Caliban definitely undergoes quite a bit throughout this story with a major transformation in his character taking place roughly about halfway through: read it, and you'll see what I mean!
