This novel tells the story of two families who become intertwined despite living half a world apart and without really knowing or ever even meeting each other. One is a poor family struggling to survive in rural India. The other is a pair of medical school students who meet and fall in love, one being from India.
The American couple end up having fertility issues, while the destitute couple in India are exactly the opposite. Not wanting to know her husband has disposed of another unwanted girl, the Indian mother smuggles her baby daughter to an orphanage in Mumbai. And it is there, where the American couple end up adopting her.
The story moves through the life of the girl in parallel with the lives of her adoptive and biological parents. In the end it is a tear jerker, but has a great message about who your real family is.

This book is infinitely better than any adaptation you can watch on TV. Atwood presents a stunning, stark creation of the world within Gilead, where women are there for one purpose; to breed. The story of one woman’s journey and the harsh reality of it gives you a sense of frustration. TV land has managed to spin another season out of this story. However, read the book and you’ll understand why I prefer it up to the bitter end.

"“Portrait of a Lady on Fire,” which enveloped me in its soft, magical world of colors where the innocent joy of discovering love is so quietly captivating. I never wanted to end. It also features my favorite shot of the year (which contains a small, handheld mirror, you’ll know it when you see it.) and is, I find, the most beautifully photographed scripted film, only to be matched by…"

I officially adore this series. It is brilliant, filled with action, drama, romance...what more could a girl ask for? I certainly couldn't anyway :D

It's been one hell of a journey from Forsaken to this one and I've loved every roller coasting minute of it, though sometimes I have to admit I wanted to bang Beck and Riley's heads together in the hopes of knocking some sense into them where the other was concerned but hey, it all worked out in the end!

I'm sad it's come to an end but happy that the end of the world was averted by this pair :P

Due to this series, I am now a big fan of the author and I'm looking forward to reading others by her including Briar Rose when it arrives in the post :D
