If you were to look up the definition of "underrated horror gem" then Intruder would be staring you in the face.
Brought to life by several members of the team behind Evil Dead II, it's no surprise that this movie is equally as fun as it is gory. It's cast of likable characters drive the film for the mostly bloodless first half, with final girl Elizabeth Cox being a stand out.
When things do get gory, Intruder doesn't fuck about. The kills inflicted upon the main cast are pretty damn creative, and incredibly realised by fantastic practical effects courtesy of Robert Kurtzman and Greg Nicotero. The scenes not set in the main supermarket hall have a low budget and dimly lit Evil Dead feel to them, and results in a genuinely nasty atmosphere when coupled with the more violent moments.

It's a shame that Intruder isn't as widely hailed as some of its better known slasher contemporaries, for all of the above reasons.

Untold, uninspired, and underwhelming take on a Dracula origin story, very much in the style of a comic book movie. Historians look away: Vlad Tepes is a client king of the Turks, who is forced to rebel against them and seeks out demonic, blood-sucking powers to help him defeat his opponents. (Charles Dance, playing his mentor in evil, is the best thing in the movie.)

Mildly diverting as an empty spectacle (gasp as Superdrac uses his FIST OF BATS power to squish the Turks!) but essentially useless: the film fails to engage with either the historical Vlad the Impaler or the iconic Dracula. Luke Evans fails to communicate any essential darkness lurking in his character, just coming across as a nice guy who makes a bad decision under pressure. If Dracula's not going to be a properly evil monster, what's the point of him? Good effects and reasonable art direction, but misses the point in every narrative sense.

If you haven't seen the 1988 Child's Play, you'd be surprised by this decent film. If you have seen the original, you may keep looking for comparisons and come up short. There are a few comparisons to the original 1988 movie of the same title. Chucky has been revamped and recast to adhere to a younger generation of horror fans. While I missed Brad Dourif's sinister voice, I enjoyed the new life Mark Hamill brought to the sinister doll we all grew up with. This is a different Chucky, by far. Chucky is comical and slowly grows more and more evil as the movie reels on. But you can't help but feel a little sorry for the little guy. It's basically just bad programming as opposed to an evil soul inhabiting the toy. There are different deaths in the movie. While it's less predictable in comparison to the original, its entertaining to watch and not laggy like most remakes. :)

Here we go again. Yet another reboot of a popular movie series surgically removing the charm of the original actors and director. Guillermo Del Toro is a truly visionary director who turns monsters into romantically tragic figures, like a underworld Heathcliff or a mutated Rochester. To review, Hellboy was raised from the bowels of Hell toward the end of World War II by Nazi supporter Grigor Rasputin to turn the tide for the Axis. A squandron of Allied forces closed the portal before more "monsters" could come through, but Professor Broom, a paranormal investigator, adopted the baby Hellboy and raised him to protect the world from other forces of evil. Humans do not trust Hellboy since he was created by Evil and the supernatural beasts cannot trust him because fights for Good. Cast aside, Hellboy must prove himself as a immortal sorceress rebuilds her empire on Earth with Hellboy as the key.
