I felt that I was carried along on the voice of Eimear McBride as she narrated The City Changes It’s Face. I actually had to check if this was written as some sort of prose-poem because of the cadence, but no. I was hearing it the way it should be read (and here is the number one reason why I love audiobooks).

This is the sequel to The Lesser Bohemians - which I haven’t read. I didn’t feel that I needed to have read it to understand this book, but I will go back and read it, based on how much I enjoyed this.

The style of writing feels experimental, especially when we experience a lengthy description of a film that Stephen makes from the perspective of Eily watching it (I wished I could watch it too).

Obviously, it could be argued that I’ve started my Eimear McBride reading experience in the wrong place, but at least I have somewhere to go next! This novel really made me want to catch up with her previous work.

Science Fiction meets complicated Romance
I am both a romance fanatic and a science fiction buff and one day I was just poking around looking for something that would blend these two things without being...you know...bad. I've read a lot of things about some lady in an experimental ship who accidentally ends up on a planet where a hot alien alpha dude wants to make her his interplanetary bride.

I did not want that. I wanted a complex story with romantic themes set in space...and that's exactly what this book gave me.


Fortune's Pawn rocked. Devi Morris is a badass, power armor clad mercenary with a dream to join an elite merc unit...but she has to get some expedition references first. So what does she do? Chooses the one ship with the worst track record in the hopes it with fast track her ambitions to the top. While I wont put spoilers I will say she gets her wish...kinda. She finds romance...that gets VERY complicated, mystery, and tossed into what is bound to end in an interstellar war.

9/10, highly recommend.

The characterisation of Charlie was superb throughout. (0 more)
Sensationally clever without being pretentious
I found this book on a blog recommending books for depression sufferers, although I'm not sure in retrospect why this book was on that list. The book is written in the form of progress reports written by the protagonist, Charlie, who starts off the book as an adult with severe learning difficulties, during a less enlightened era. Despite his rough treatment by a society that fails to understand him, he is thoroughly charming, warm and kind, but above all desperate to better himself by learning to write and read. When he is offered the chance to undergo groundbreaking experimental surgery that will elevate his capacity to learn, he jumps at the chance. Algernon is a lab mouse who has had the surgery already and is considered a genius (by mouse standards).


Although this is technically science fiction, I found it more a focus on society and the perceptions of intelligence and happiness. I grew such fondness for Algernon and Charlie, I found the ending truly heartbreaking.

I'm not normally a fan of the sci-fi genre, but I couldn't put this down.

360. Eli. I dug it! I went in blind with this one. Saw new release horror on Netflix, I said yes please. So it starts out with a Bubble Boy senario, 500 dolla!! You want 500 dolla?? Sorry. Little Eli has some issues, he has to live in a bubble, due to an auto-immune disorder. If he breathes air, he dead. Luckily his parents care and find him a doctor thats doing some off the grid experimental stuff, oh and the hospital they take him to seems to be haunted, no biggie. While there, the treatments well just seem to be making him worse, but to help him through feeling like crap he meets, this random redhead that seems to only come out at night befriends him, and supports him when he starts to feel things aren't right. Stranger Things have happened... ;) And the longer Eli stays, the worse he feels, but he also knows that something ain't right, and maybe he's not sick at all? Maybe the doctor wants to kill him, his parents?? But...why???? Pretty creepy flick. Didn't know what to expect so I liked the outcome. I say, do. Filmbufftim on FB
