Much like Far Cry 4 (which I loved) this is an open-world, vaguely linear action adventure game. Lots of terrain to explore, lots of odd encounters with strange NPCs.

The difference, and the real hook for me, is the storyline. Trying to avoid spoilers, go watch the trailer and get sucked in. Based in the US you are a US Marshal fighting a religious cult. Trying to reclaim Hope County from this bizarre and extreme set of believers.

The multiplayer is good and well thought out and different but I will admit that I have spent very little time in the Multiplayer world of Far Cry 5.

Boring Gameplay Loop
I really wanted to like No Man's Sky. I bought it on launch and was disappointed, but I didn't return it because I had hopes of future patches. A year later, the game is just as disappointing.

On Reddit, you will see a lot of people who say the game is completely different than when it launched, and that is true. But the core gameplay loop hasn't changed: spend a bunch of time trying to find better ships or guns, rinse and repeat. Finding these upgrades can take a long time, and do not really pay off. If you boil it down, the 30-60 minutes you just spent looking result in only 1 additional item slot.

David McK (3587 KP) rated Spectre (2015) in Movies

Spectre (2015)
Spectre (2015)
2015 | Action
The penultimate James Bond film of the Daniel Craig era, and we're FINALLY starting to get back to what made the Bond films so enjoyable to begin with: Girls, guns and gadgets (although I'll freely admit that may be somewhat sexist. But then again, so is the character ...).

We're not entirely there yet, though, with this film going to great pains to try to form a coherent narrative out of all the previous Daniel Craig outings as Bond, with the reveal of SPECTRE and of a face from Bond's past (albeit that last handled very shoddily: just sort of thrown in there, if you will) and with a plot that takes in the dangers of global survellaince.

Like the rest of the Daniel Craig Bond film: just OK, nothing special.

The Dark Tower (2017)
The Dark Tower (2017)
2017 | Horror, Sci-Fi, Western
Boring male power fantasy with little to no character development
It's hard to tell who is meant to be the protagonist of this film, the young boy, Jake, or the Gunslinger. Sure, we're introduced to Jake first, and only really meet the Gunslinger towards the end of Act 1, which should signal that it's Jake.

But Jake is boring. SO BORING. He doesn't really have any character flaws. Oh sure, he has problems, expositionally convenient plot device "visions", but no real, tangible character elements. He reacts violently towards another kid at school, but this isn't treated as a flaw and this isn't a movie where Jake is going to learn that there's a better solution than violence. At best he's going to learn that it's bad to use your fists to solve problems - guns are much more efficient.

The Gunslinger is presented with all the hallmarks of a protagonist. He's got a defined past and a defined character flaw. He's consumed with thoughts of revenge and will let the world burn around him to get it. The problem is, the story never gives him a point where he actually has to make a choice between revenge and something better.

The villain, while fun, seems to have no internal motivation whatsoever. Why does he want to destroy the universe? Because that's what semi-omnipotent bad guys want to do, I guess.

And I get it, he's called the Gunslinger, he shoots guns. It's all very straightforward. But that doesn't mean it's not still kind of boring to watch EVERY problem they encounter get solved by just shooting at it enough while every single woman in the movie exists to be murdered, assaulted, and grossly sexualized by the villain.

It used every trope in the book, it used them badly, and the script was just...not good.
