The story (4 more)
The cast
The setting
The ending
It's so much more the alien movie.
Such a unique take on a genre that needed something original.
District 9 is one of the most original alien "invasion" movies out there. It was a serious breath of fresh air in a genre that tends to be so very cliche and repetitive. Don't get me wrong I love alien movies but you can only watch people get chased around and abducted so many times before you crave something different.
And at it's heart District 9 is so much more then just an alien movie it is a movie about immigrant and refugees and how the world tends to treat them.
My favorite part of the movie is the part that most people hated and that is the ending. I usually HATE open-ended ending but with District 9 I felt like it fit the movie so well that I couldn't be mad about it.

Haley Mathiot (9 KP) rated When Lightning Strikes (1-800-Where-R-You, #1) in Books

I hate Meg Cabot. she is a terrible writer. she doesn't write sentinces, she writes fragments and then puts more fragments at the end to clear up what was perfectly clear in the first place. she leaves out things that are important. she doesn't describe stuff. her prose stinks. how on EARTH she became a best selling and popular author, i have no idea.
but.
i read the first book of her series here, "When Lightning Strikes," and seriously had to read the others. i still haven't read the last book, my library doesn't have it in right now, but this book got me hooked to a story that was written by (excuse me) a sucky writer. it was wild, weird, crazy, funny, and had some very creative twists in it. great story.
now if only she could learn to write. sentinces, i mean. (<-- example of what she does. i swear i don't write like that normally.)

I had a love/hate relationship with this
Contains spoilers, click to show
They could have worked a few things out differently, they definitely overplayed the bad guys in places they should have been more focused on what was actually happening around them with the whole city falling apart and giant creatures attacking everywhere. The action scenes between the animals and The rock was just too much. There should have definitely more action with the animals themselves with all the crazy changes they had gone through it would have been epic
BTPBookclub (18 KP) rated The Woman in the Window in Books

Messes with your head
This is a story that will mess with your head over and over… One revelation after another. I loved it. The Woman in the Window is set out in days and short chapters making it an easy to read story which can be devoured easily.
At first I thought hmm this woman (Anna) is a bit strange maybe she is just one of those nosy neighbours we all hate, boy was I wrong. Readers are in for a treat with this story. I must admit I thought with the story being based in just one specific location that it was going to be dull and dragged out, yet again I was wrong.
I awarded four stars for this story as I found it took a while to get to the good bits but it still turned out to be a brilliant brain twister of a story to dive into. Highly recommend!

A Lost Piece of Hope
Where do I even begin with this trainwreck of a movie. I never walk out of a movie. I never turn a movie off if I don't need to. If anything, I'll never watch it again. This movie when I saw it at the theater back in 2015, was almost that 1 movie to do it. I had to grip my seat just to stay seated and not leave. From a slashed budget leaving bad effects to some that don't look done. To a bad story, bad acting and apparently a horrible production with a director who claimed to have a better cut that the studio didn't want to go with. It's absolutely no wonder this film was garbage. I wouldn't recommend this to someone I really hate. The only torture this film could do is bore you to death. Don't see this if you haven't. If you have, I'm sorry.
Lilyn G - Sci-Fi & Scary (91 KP) rated Homescapes in Apps
Feb 3, 2018
The storyline gives it a slight edge on other matching games.
I've been playing Homescapes for a few months at this point. (I'm somewhere in the 200s level-wise, but can't recall exactly which one offhand.) The storyline is really what sets Homescapes apart from the other match-gem games. I've played the original game, Gardenscapes, and it just couldn't hold my attention. However, with this one they seem to have hit upon the perfect mix of silly and interesting to keep me playing along.
I especially like (and simultaneously hate) how every so often you have a chance to get an hour or so of unlimited lives while playing. Because, naturally, this happens at the worst possible time for me! This game is responsible for me staying up until 1 or 2 am on several occasions because of this.
Better than some of the other matching games out there. Worth giving it a shot.

Entertainment Editor (1988 KP) rated Ora et Labora in Tabletop Games

Ora et Labora
Who woulda thought? In 2007 (way before I was gaming) amongst the many new games released at Spiel, one stuck out especially. A game where you try to build a well-balanced farm consisting of crops, pastures and growing your family. No, I am not talking about Farmville! (I get that question over and over from newbies….ugh), I’m talking about Agricola. A game that has now conjured up a slew of awards from “Best complex game” by the Spiel des Jahres to even dethroning Puerto Rico’s 5 year running of highest rated game on the Geek. Uwe Rosenberg, the designer of the now much loved Agricola, has recently released “Ora et Labora” – A hot-off-the-press / sold-out almost everywhere game that I have very quickly formed an extreme love/hate relationship with.
So the good is the game rocks!

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2171 KP) rated No Cats Allowed (Cat in the Stacks, #7) in Books
Mar 9, 2018
The Athena College Library has a new director, and Oscar Reilly seems determined to drive all the staff away. The heads of the library’s departments hate him and Charlie’s friend Melba is ready to quit. In fact, Charlie’s issue, that Oscar is claiming allergies as a reason that Charlie can’t bring his cat Diesel to work anymore, seems minor. It’s not terribly surprising when Oscar turns up dead, but who actually killed him?
Those who like this series will love this installment. The characters are as delightful as ever, and we get some advancement on series plot threads. The murder is set up well with good suspects and motives that Charlie has to work his way through until we reach the logical solution. This is my favorite to date in the series.
NOTE: I received a copy of this book in hopes I would review it.

Clare Parrott (294 KP) rated Hard to Hold (Black Ops Heros #1) in Books
Feb 13, 2018
The action starts from the very first page when Anna nearly comes to a sticky end with a lorry, laying in the hospital her next of kin (according to her passport, that she hadn't changed) Nick, her ex husband comes strolling back into her life, it's a love hate relationship and Anna hasn't seen him in 5 years.
This book made me want to bang their heads together, they're always bitching and snipping at each other. Always trying to get one over on the other and whatever Anna seems to do trouble always follows.
"I'm not exactly predisposed to granting you any favours right now, Anna. I can't believe some of the situations you get yourself into. Jesus, what are you? A gravitational force for trouble!"
It's infuriating, and I just wished they'd shut up and get on with it. Saying that, I did enjoy it, I thought it was well written and I would read other titles by this author.
