The first of Walt Disney's historic features was a pleasure to watch. Beautifully animated with deceptively gentle strokes, we are delicately guided through the Brothers Grimm's fairy tale. But this is still a fairy tale and a 1930′s film, made at a time where stories were not so toned down for our children, and a healthy dose of fear and horror was not shied away from.

Snow White is definitely a ditsy princess, so innocent that her counter has to be the personification of pure evil and she certainly is. The Queen, represents some of our darkest emotions, and there is little effort to tone this down, which I liked, a lot. She is evil, driven by her vain jealously to firstly attempt to have Snow White murdered, and then failing that, to poison her into a narcoleptic state and have her buried alive! Is this what you now think of a s Disney film, with a U rating? No, but thanks to this and the following films successes, this is a prized classic and untouchable. I think that this is a true family movie, with as much darkness as there is light, with some great musical numbers, indelible characters and an animation style which is truly timeless.

I mean this is a musical which was made in Technicolor less than ten years after the innovation of sound was introduced to black and white films. This is a film which children feel a part of and don't even compare to black and white's of the same era, which of course, they hate and don't feel are real.

Hats off to Walt, who I must admit, I've never really been a fan of, but I'm working my way through his classics and am liking what I am seeing so far.

I’ll be honest, and my best friend Cheyenne is going to kill me for this, but when I first started reading this at college, I absolutely hated it. Now I can put that just down to the fact that I naturally expected to hate any book we had to learn about in English. Because I love Rebecca and wouldn’t be able to cope without it.

Essentially, it’s an adaptation of Jane Eyre (which I LOVE). I always joke that it’s fanfiction that has become a classic (if only). I didn’t actually read Jane Eyre until after I had read this for the first time, but the book made so much more sense to me then.

The nameless narrator is brilliant, if a little bit childish. I can remember the first time I read it, it really annoyed me that she whined like a child a lot. But then again, when your new husband is still obsessed with his dead wife, who wouldn’t complain?

I fell in love with Maxim in the same way that I fell in love with Mr Rochester. They are so similar – all dark, mysterious, and brooding… what every girl wants in a book! Even through the whole plot, I found it impossible to ever dislike him, despite some of the events. I’m not sure why.

I love that there’s so many different meanings of the book. Spending one year analysing it in college was never enough for me – I’m still constantly digging out new meanings, especially now I’ve got a friend who loves this even more than I do.

I almost always take this to Cornwall with me to re-read on a miserable day. It’s the perfect place to read this book and I can always snuggle down with it.

This is something everyone should read at least once in their life.

I was actually quite disappointed by this one. I felt like I expected more from it, especially with it dealing with more serious subjects such as abortion right from the start.

The reason I don’t read much YA any more is the way that everything is glazed over and ignored. I feel like Aftercare Instructions had the chance to be a really good, deep novel about an issue that rarely makes it into YA, but in reality, it brushed over it.

I need to point out I only made it 1/3 of the way through before giving up.

Everything seemed to happen slowly and the narration seemed too whiney to be realistic. The main character, Gen is unlikable and annoying. Within the first 1/3 of the book her character is barely built and does nothing other than complain.

The plot didn’t move, and when nothing happens and I’m that far into the book, I know it’s time to give up.

The book is set out with alternating chapters being in a script format laying out the backstory of the characters. The first YA book I read with this format was cute. The second – fun. But when I’ve now read countless YAs set out in this format, it’s much less quirky and now seems a bit like it’s something to do to fill the pages without adding a decent description or trying to set a scene. It’s a space filler and it just ruins YAs for me.

I always hate DNF-ing books from Netgalley, especially ones by new authors but I just felt like this one could have been a lot more than it was, and it just seemed too much like the stereotypical YA I want to avoid reading and that I wish wasn’t taking over the genre lately.

It’s got five-star reviews everywhere, has won so many awards, and literally, everyone is talking about it. So, of course, it’s worth a try.

Only I didn’t enjoy it to the point where I got halfway through and couldn’t finish it. I wasn’t even sure whether to post the review because I know that lots of people will disagree with me over this.

I was so excited for a book to be out that’s about police brutality in America towards black teenagers, and was surprised, to begin with, that something as serious as this was in a YA book, but also happy that it was being told to teenagers. It sounded like my ideal book.

But I just couldn’t get along with it at all. The whole idea with the book is to show what casual racism is doing to America, but at the same time on every few pages, there’s another part talking about how horrible and funny and evil white people are. If a book wants to make a stand against racism, make a stand against it from both sides, not just one. You cannot end racism by calling the other race.

I just found it really one-sided in its battle against racism. I am definitely not saying that the police shooting was right, let me just say that, and Starr has every right to hate the police for shooting her best friend. However, this does not mean that every few pages there needs to be a comment about how awful white people are.

A much healthier focus for the book would have been equality, not switching the racism to the other side in a ‘how-do-you-like-it-now’ move.

Not as bad as expected
I can't lie, when I heard Will Smith was playing the genie in this I pretty much wrote this film off for good. Whilst it isnt quite the car crash I'd expected, it pales in comparison to the original animated version.

Naomi Scott is great as Jasmine and has a fantastic voice, and she outperforms everyone else in this film. Mena Massoud is enjoyable to watch but lacking in a bit of Aladdin's charm. Strangely I didn't hate Will Smith as the genie. Don't get me wrong I didn't love him either but I didn't want to cry everytime he was on screen (although I did cringe a few times). In fact the worst person in this film was Jafar. I really don't know what they were thinking, he isn't sinister or slimy, he's just laughable. Not a villain youd be afraid of.

The film itself follows the original plot fairly well, with a lot of nods and quotes to the original too. I do think the ending and final stand off against Jafar was a little poor. Whilst I wasn't expecting them to completely follow the original, there are some bits that I'm disappointed weren't included. And of course there's the songs. The songs really make this watchable although sadly they don't have quite the magic of the animated version. It also made me laugh that Guy Ritchie couldn't resist throwing in some of his trademark slow motion and camera angles. Not many, admittedly he has toned it down a lot but there's still a few Ritchie moments.

This isnt a bad live action film, but sadly it isnt a great one either. But all things considered it could have been much worse!

Men in Black International expands the world of the galaxy defenders even though it already opened up the universe. The film itself is a huge missed opportunity. Similar to the first film, it is the story of a trainee on an important mission to save the universe. Instead of a hidden galaxy, there is a secret weapon located on Earth that needs to be protected from aliens (Bugs/The Hive, a Borg-esque collective that insinuates all life into its society). Very similar to the earlier Captain Marvel, the villains are not who you think they are--the people who look like the villain turn out to be trying to save themselves. The biggest problem is that the most important relationships are never really formed. There is a prince who is supposed to be a great friend to Agent H, but all he really tells us is that H changed in the ensuing years which given what happens leaves many questions unanswered. Second is this "Queen" who was in a romantic relationship with H, but we never see much of their history to show why she may or may not hate him. The movie is also too predictable. Early in the film, we see Mollie save an alien which will obviously save her. And, it seemed obvious that the events of Paris 2016 would reveal that the Hive took someone over, but why wait three years to come back. As Will Smith stated in the first MIB, the effects of the neuralizer would mess with a man's brain (I just rewatched it last night). But why would an agent ever allow another agent to neuralize him/her? This is the better movie.

The Last Namsara is Kristen Ciccarelli's debut novel and I am in love. The world building was brilliantly done and laid a strong foundation for her story to grow and develop.

Asha is a dragon hunter and a feared Iksari who is strong and dedicated to her role in the kingdom. Despite the fact that her actions as a child called the dragons who burned her city, she fights every day to redeem herself from her past mistakes and make her father, the King, proud. It was nice to see the main character learns to value herself, even though she has grown up shamed and feared by the people. She overcomes her prejudices and the damage instilled upon her over the course of the novel.

Her transformative journey begins when a slave, Torwin is introduced to her life. He treats her like a normal person, just as she learns to treat him as one. He opens her eyes to the truth of the world and thaws her damaged heart, leading her to learn so much about the people in her kingdom and a better way to live.

There was also a well-written antagonist who was so controlling and cruel that you couldn't help but hate him. It was a nice juxtaposition to Torwin's character and helped push the plot along. For me, the romance was a secondary plot point and sometimes only slowed down the pacing. It wasn't the most important element of the story.

The world building, mythology and the dragons are what shone for me. I cannot wait to see more of this world. I listened to this via audiobook and the narrator, Pearl Mackie did a fantastic job. I loved the authenticity she brought to Asha's character and would highly recommend this audiobook.

Bailey Carpenter is a successful private investigator for a large law firm in Miami. While still reeling from the deaths of both of her parents, her life is fairly benign, until she is attacked one night while investigating a client.

Suddenly, Bailey's life is turned upside down. She's unable to sleep, eat, or work. She spends her days (and nights) trapped inside her condo, suffering from crippling anxiety and nightmares, and wracked with guilt from the attack. She starts watching her neighbor in the building across the street using binoculars, but things get even more out of control when she realizes he may be watching her, too.

First of all, a definite trigger warning that this book depicts a pretty brutal rape. It's tough to read about, and I would hate for anyone to pick up this novel without realizing its subject. I do applaud Fielding for trying to cover such a hard subject, though I'm not sure it's always accurately portrayed.

The book gets off to a slow start - I almost put it down. It's a hard subject to read about, and Bailey is a little hard to like and understand at first. The storyline gets a bit incredulous, but it certainly picked up, and I tore through the second half of the book. It ties up a little easily - and I'm not sure I buy Bailey going from completely devastated to seemingly okay, but I appreciate Fielding trying to show how much rape can hurt and leave its victims feeling powerless.

Overall, it's an interesting read and Bailey's niece, Jade, is a fun character. It would be great to see the two of them appear together again.

True Romance is littered with star power and each of them deliver. With a who's who of Hollywood actors and actresses it's no surprise that even the supporting roles left you with something to remember. The late James Gandolfini was my personal favorite playing the role of Virgil. He's a brooding gangster who looks like he's about to snap in every single scene that he's in. You hate him, yet you appreciate his ruthlessness at the same time.

Beginning: 10
The film gets off to a very intriguing start in its first ten minutes. Clarence Worley (Christian Slater) and Alabama Whitman (Patricia Arquette) get off to a fast start that ultimately sets the tone for the rest of the film. You're given a small taste of what's to come which makes you want more.

My wife and I went back and forth on this. She thought the ending was improbable. I thought that, considering the rest of the movie as a whole, the ending was exactly what it needed to be. Their entire relationship was improbable so the insanity of how the movie concludes was the improbable cherry on top. Well done.

Overall: 96
True Romance is one of those films you don't expect to like, then you end up loving it. The awesome gun battle at the end is not only absolute bedlam, but it one of those scenes you remember for a long time. You won't forget it, nor will you forget Christopher Walken's intense interrogation scene. I can see now why this film made an all-time Top 100 list.

Star Trek for a modern audience
When trailers for The Orville and for Star Trek Discovery first did the rounds, I was more excited the The Orville than STD.
The Orville captures a feel for Star Trek that STD just doesn't. It shows a hopeful future that has its problems but tries to deal with them in a diplomatic/peaceful way but isn't afraid to show its teeth if cornered.
As with many new series, The Orville struggles to find its feet and find its balance between sci-fi and comedy. This is oh so evident in the first few episodes, which aim for humour a little too much and miss the mark. By later episodes, the balance is a little better. As the crew grows into their roles, the humour is better and more focused. Instead of gags thrown in it becomes more natural like crew playing practical jokes on each other, people mentioning foibles of other crew (which is funnier if you've SEEN said foibles in an earlier episode), elevator music, love/hate relationships and some seriously great cameos and appearances from A-list stars (even some Star Trek alum). The fact that The Orville has such great pedigree in the form of so many writers, actors and directors from various Star Trek series on board shines through with every new episode
I like all the characters on the ship, and their interactions are building a family on this little ship which makes me want to watch more.
The Orville has some of the best features of a Star Trek series, great ships, uniforms, aliens and stories with some humour thrown in. I cannot wait for a season 2 and would recommend this over STD all day long.
