1979 | Horror, Sci-Fi
Ah Alien, you’ve turned me into a snivelling wreck on many occasions. The sole reason I began having night terrors, Alien found its way into my life in 2011 when I watched it for the very first time.

It’s my partner’s all-time favourite film and when that’s the case, you kind of have to watch it. Especially considering we have watched the entire Jurassic Park series upwards of 50 times – and don’t get him started on Desperate Housewives. Seriously, don’t.

There’s no denying Alien is an absolutely astonishing film and it is without a doubt one of the best horror films I have ever seen, but those face-huggers have been the cause of many sleepless nights in the Brannon household, trust me.

Sweet read but not for everyone
A Monk's Guide to a Clean House and Mind is literally a cleaning manual for those who follow spirituality as part of their general course. Shoukei Matsumoto, a Japanese Zen Buddhist monk, has created a simple guide for those who want to be mindful about their daily chores and why monks themselves do each task with such vigour and importance.

While the book itself is sweet, with lovely picture representations, I did feel that some of it may not apply to a secular western household as they speak of how to repair an altar. And when you live by yourself, sharing chores is not really an option. With that in mind, the book is geared for a certain audience, many of which may have to read this as just a pleasant handbook.

This period drama has a dark, gothic uneasiness to it, but the tightly drawn characters, descriptive backdrop and DunmoreÕs powerful prose keep you reading. Lizzie Fawkes has been raised by a feisty mother, Julia an early advocate of women's rights and her stepfather Augustus who writes rousing political pamphlets. Lizzie has chosen to marry a sober, stoic gentleman, John Diner Tredevant, a property developer who has invested heavily in the construction of a terrace in Bristol and the entire household has moved to the Avon gorge to maintain their supportive, close-knit relationship. As the French Revolution rolls across the Channel, the house full of radicals await news from afar and the disruption echoes through their homes. Secrets and suspicions keep you interested in the story but it's the characters that provide the entertainment and emotional pull.

406. Parasite. We meet Kim Ki-woo, as he's getting recruited to help tutor a high school girl in English, of course all his past experience is a lie, but he's good at the job at hand so why not go for it! And once he's in the door, he manages to weasel the rest of his family jobs within the same household. It's not that they are bad at the jobs, they just stole them from others. For instance, when Kim Ki-woo gets mom, Moon-gwang the maid job. However the former maid has a secret and when she shows up a few days later on the front steps, this could be the end for the family! Movie really makes you feel uncomfortable, and for me I just wanted something really bad to happen. :) Filmbufftim on FB
