Dean (6927 KP) rated Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011) in Movies
Feb 6, 2018
A classy film with a wide array of fine English actors on show. A compelling story set during the days of the cold war. However the very slow pace will put a lot of people off and it's running time is a fair bit longer than needed. One you really need to pay close attention to, and work out the code words and what they refer to. It just didn't have any real action for me, which let it down. A fine performance from talented cast nevertheless.

CBorden (67 KP) rated The Hunter’s Prayer (2017) in Movies
Feb 6, 2018
Sam Worthington pushes himself as an assassin hired to kill a teenage girl as he struggles to face his own demons - addiction, his past as a soldier, and his lack of relationship with his own teenage daughter. The movie is action from start to finish with not a lot of great suspense or unexpected plot twists. However, for an action flick, its rather mild presentation (minimal swearing, not overly graphic, no unnecessary sexual content) plus the realistic potrayal of the emotions the hunter and the hunted must work through, this is an enjoyable movie!

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2346 KP) rated Dating Dead Men in Books
Mar 9, 2018
A call from her brother sends Wollie off on a wild ride while she's in the middle of a dating project and trying to help her greeting card store take off. Has her brother really witnessed a murder? Or is it his paranoid schizorenia acting up again? A twisty novel with great characters. Just pay attention at the beginning because a lot is thrown at you quickly.

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2346 KP) rated Mistletoe Murder (A Lucy Stone Mystery, #1) in Books
Mar 9, 2018
Lucy Stone is working nights at a mail order company. When the owner is killed in the parking lot, she begins to piece together gossip to find the killer. I like the characters, but the plot was slowed down so much in the first half by every day life (Lucy is a married mother of two), that I was bored. Things did pick up in the second half.

Dana (24 KP) rated City of Heavenly Fire in Books

Holy hell. I made myself read this slowly because I knew how much it would hurt. I was not disappointed. Cassandra Clare did an outstanding job in tearing my heart to shreads. Thank you for the pain. I can proudly say that I cried a lot because of this book. This was a beautiful end to a magnificent series. I am glad to have been a part of Clary and her friends' journeys. Thank you again, Cassandra Clare, for giving us readers such an amazing world to disappear into.

Dana (24 KP) rated Plessy v. Ferguson: A Brief History with Documents in Books
Mar 23, 2018
This was a very informative text about the Plessy vs Ferguson case. I had to read this for a Law, Society, and Literature class. It has a lot of really interesting texts about other people's thoughts on the case and essays and speeches that just happened around the time of the case. If you want to learn more about the Plessy vs Ferguson case, pick this book up and give it a read. It's pretty interesting to see what was going on in the minds of the people at this time.

Dana (24 KP) rated Oliver Twist in Books
Mar 23, 2018
I can honestly say that I did not enjoy this book. For me, Charles Dickens' works are all very repetitive. There's an orphan who continuously falls onto bad times, then suddenly figures things out and gets his life turned around. Everything happened too slowly and was way too drawn for me or it was important information told in passing. The chapters jump around a lot so it can get confusing temporally. There are too many characters with similar names to keep track of. Overall, I didn't enjoy this novel.

Zuky the BookBum (15 KP) rated The Maiden Thief in Books
Mar 15, 2018
I thoroughly enjoyed this story once I'd gotten closer to the end. To begin with, I found this a little clunky to read, things didn't seem to flow so well but once Jakob appeared in the story things started to become a little clearer and things got a little more mysterious.
It's a pretty easy story to predict but its gorgeously creepy and, in the end, very well presented.
I'm loving short stories at the moment, they often bring me a lot more joy than the full-length books I read.

Dean (6927 KP) rated Wild Things 2 (2004) in Movies
Mar 31, 2018
Carbon copy of the first
So they almost did a carbon copy plot of the first, so it becomes very predictable and the twists are no surprise at all. Then do it with a smaller budget, lesser known actors and make it no way near as sexy as the first. If you liked the first one a lot this is a cheap imitation. It's not a bad thriller, but if you have seen the first there are no surprises to be had. Otherwise it's ok viewing if you like thrillers.
