a slow burner
Independent reviewer for Archaeolibrarian, I was gifted my copy of this book.
A bit of a slow burner, long build up kinda book, this one!
It reminds me a little of reading Game of Thrones, NOT in the content, not at all but in the way the stage is set with many players, who have their own agendas. Many players who have a say. Many players who did NOT get a say too!
But my overwhelming reaction to finishing this was, I missed something. Something was missing and I cannot figure out what.
There is a book before this one, Royal Guard of Draga, but reading the blurb, it isn't what I'm missing. I think what I'm missing is more history of Draga, more about the original invasion of the Neprijat monsters who have returned to take over the galaxy. We get bits and pieces, but not enough for me to get the whole picture, the whole history. Maybe that will come with future books, I dunno. That's just how I feel, and ya'll know I love to share how I feel!
I did think it would be a little more on the explicit side, given how we are introduced to Nadyah and why she is in court with Adelina, but it isn't overly.
It's a GOOD book, well written from lots of those players, it just didn't grab me and it took far longer for me to read the 276 pages than it should have. Maybe book two will be better. Off to read it now!
A good solid 3 stars

Mel Unleashed
418. Blood Father. I had the feeling the whole time that this easily could have been the script for the last Rambo flick, Sly said no, Mel just got off house arrest so, it worked out. In this, I think Mel is playing a version of himself, and just went with it. Link is an ex-con recovering alcoholic that gets a call from his missing daughter, like legit missing, reward money type missing, anyways, she just called to let her know that she just killed her Mexican mobster boyfriend, and she's on the run and needs help. So Link goes and picks up Lydia and brings her back to his home/tattoo parlor. But wouldn't you know it, those mobsters find out where she went, and show up in a pretty amusing gunfight, each time Link pulls the trigger he announces out loud the criminal charge he is now going to face. Escape they do, on the run they must go. Once at a motel, obviously terrified that a criminal organization wants her and her father dead, she still has time to be a teenage girl and come flirt with the checkout guy, and that's when she sees the TV, the law is now looking for them as well. So go deeper into hiding they must, she dyes her hair blonde, Link shaves his pretty awesome beard to look like Mel's very real mugshot, and off they go again. Will the mobsters catch up? Of course they will or there'd be no point! It's definitely not great, but still fun to watch. Filmbufftim on FB!

Christoph Waltz (2 more)
The Day of the dead festival scenes
Aston Martin DB10
Spectacular? Almost
Not quite hitting the highs of Casino Royale or Skyfall but not far off it. Another deep, dark and menacing Bond film. However it feels like something is missing. A lot of slow building up without actually delivering what I hoped for. Again Christoph Waltz steals every scene he is in. A very good film but I like my Bond films a bit more shaken and stirred.
Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2542 KP) rated The Spellmans Strike Again (The Spellmans, #4) in Books
Mar 9, 2018
For this go around about a family of dysfunctional PI's, Rae is obsessed with getting a wrongfully convicted man out of jail, Izzy is trying to find a missing butler, and doorknobs are disappearing from the Spellman's house. As usually, the family relationships provide the laughs and the plot with any mystery being secondary. And, as always, the book is very funny and hard to put down.

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2542 KP) rated How to Survive a Killer Séance (Party Planning, #3) in Books
Mar 9, 2018
Event planner Presley Parker is hired for a seance themed party at the Winchester Mystery House. But part way through, the "ghost" goes off script. Next thing she knows, the host is missing and a body has turned up. I really like the characters, but plot could have used a bit more polish. It dragged in a few places, and the ending felt rushed.

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2542 KP) rated In Dublin's Fair City (Molly Murphy Mysteries, #6) in Books
Mar 9, 2018
Irish immigrant Molly Murphy returns to Ireland on a job to find a missing relative. Unfortunately, she gets involved with a murder on board the boat taking her back to her native country. I normally love this historical series, but this one was up to par. The mystery was sacrificed in favor of the historical plot, which was good enough to redeem the book.

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2542 KP) rated Nightmare (Dangerous Times, #2) in Books
Mar 9, 2018
Maia is at the newest amusement park in the country - Ghost Town - when she sees a friend as one of the ghosts. Then she finds out this friend is missing. What is going on? This is a Christian novel with heavy ghost elements. Yet it treats the ghosts are real, or at least potentially real. Very well done with some creepy scenes. Perfect Halloween read.

Katie (868 KP) rated Songkick Concerts in Apps
Jun 9, 2018
Songkick is great and makes it so easy to follow my favorite bands and know when they're touring. I didn't realize how many shows I was missing until I downloaded this app.
The only issue I had was that it wouldn't show all shows by certain bands. So this is a great resource but you'll probably want to check other sites as well when you see that your favorite band is touring. You may just find them at a location closer to you.
