Awix (3310 KP) rated Godzilla (2014) in Movies

Godzilla (2014)
Godzilla (2014)
2014 | Mystery, Sci-Fi
Second American attempt at a Godzilla movie avoids some of the old pitfalls which scuppered the Roland Emmerich version, but discovers some brand ones and promptly stumbles into those instead. A slightly oblique take on the Godzilla mythology - Godzilla is not the result of nuclear testing but a survivor from an earlier epoch - and the fact the film often seems more interested in the Muto monsters (Godzilla's opponents this time around) result in a film with a rather odd feel, for all that on paper it looks like a more 'classic' Godzilla story.

They get a lot right - Godzilla is a properly imposing beast, and there are monster battles at the centre of the film - but it's much more po-faced than the Emmerich version, apparently worried that if it cracks a smile for a second or acknowledges its own absurdity everyone will instantly lose interest. Gareth Edwards' habit of cutting away to another sequence every time the monsters start fighting rapidly becomes very annoying, too. A better Godzilla movie than the 1998 version, certainly; but less assured and capable as a piece of entertainment.

Not sure on this one.
Ok so I read the reviews and not many were impressed, I have to agree compared to the first one this wasnt much. On the other hand though I did half enjoy this, was a bit gutted they had alot of people running around like zombies! The monsters were pretty good although nothing like the monsters in the original Doom. I also didn't like the way they turned the story into a ancient thing that was about long before us and they wanted to claim back our world, with a different name and a bit more thought this could have been alot better. I would say give it a watch it wasn't terrible but don't have your heart set on it following up from the first soon because it doesn't. The only good thing was the main women played by Amy Manson, I did enjoy her character. The ending was a bit of a let down also seemed very cliché, keeps it open for a follow on whether or not they find enough of a budget to pull it off or not is another story.

Odd and more intense than previous books
This third book, again in a different city to the previous ones, is set in central Paris. A group of people have made a life for themselves in the catacombs and tunnels underneath the city, largely safe from the strange monsters and beings that have taken over the city.
Loic, the main PoV character, is a former street child who has quite easily adapted to life under the streets, scavenging for food where he can. The main threat they face is the Impressionists, a race of paint-monsters who roam the streets and tunnels rounding up the people they find.
This book is more focused on people who have made a life for themselves following The Change (still a mystery, but safe to assume that weird things can happen now), rather than those struggling to come to terms with it.
It is quite an exciting tale of rescue, bargaining and trying to evade some very strange, but very Parisian, enemies who are never as they seem.
This book, for once, is fairly self-contained and has an ending and was a good short read.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
2017 | Action/Adventure
The new open-world platform really worked for the Zelda series. I love how there is always something more to do (beat all of the shrines, find all of the Korok seeds, beat every monster...). They are also constantly updating the game and adding DLC. (0 more)
The game is very repetitive - same 5 or so types of monsters, the shrines start to feel the same. In sure this is way easier for Nintendo to produce in a shorter time, and it's their first Zelda game like this, so I totally get it. (0 more)
